Ditka was known for his vocal conservative views. In July 2004, Ditka, a self-described "ultra-ultra-ultra conservative", was reportedly considering running against the Democratic candidate, state senator Barack Obama, for an open seat in the U.S. Senate for Illinois in the 2004 Senate election. The seat was being vacated by the retiring Peter Fitzgerald, a Republican, and Republican nominee Jack Ryan withdrew from the race amid controversy at the end of June, leaving the Republicans in a bind. Local and national political leaders, from Illinois Republican Party Chair Judy Baar Topinka to National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair George Allen, whose father by the same name was an assistant coach with the Bears in the 1960s when Ditka played, met with Ditka in an effort to persuade him to fill the spot on the ticket. On July 14, however, Ditka announced he would not seek the nomination, citing personal and business considerations. His wife was against the run and he operates a chain of restaurants. Obama went on to defeat the eventual Republican candidate, former U.S. ambassador Alan Keyes, in a landslide in the November 2004 election. Ditka had since regretted not running. He also believed that Obama never would have been elected president if he had run against Obama for Senate in 2004, and claimed that Obama is the worst president in United States history.

Marshy sections of Jackson, Monroe, Wood and Clark countles produce large quantities of Sphagnum moss, providing a major but little Known state resource. The ability of Sphagnum to hold 20 times its weight in water makes it invaluable for keeping plants and nursery stock alive in shipment. It is also used in hydroponic gardening; for air shipment of flowers, and because it is sterile it is used in surgical dressings and in seed germination to prevent fungus attack in seeds. Sphagnum replaces itself in the central wetland marshes after harvest and is ready to be pulled agaln every three years. Harvest seasons run from spring until marshes freeze in the fall. Over 300,000 bales are pulled annually for shipment all over the world. No other state produces Sphagnum commercially.

WINNEBAGO INDIANS
Winnebago Indians call themselves "Hochunkgra" A Siouan people, they once occupled the southern half of Wisconsin and the northern countles of Illinois. The Black Hawk War of 1852 and a series of treaties forced the Winnebago out of their homeland, and they were removed to reservations in lowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and finally to a portion of the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska.
With each removal, small bands of Winnebago returned to Wisconsin, with the largest settlement in Jackson County. About seven miles east of Black River Falls is the historic Winnebago Indian Misston, founded by the German Reformed Church in 1878. The Mission includes about half of the Winnebago population of Jackson County, the pow-wow grounds, Indian Cemetery and Mitchell Red Cloud Memorial.
Tribal traditions are preserved through the clan system, the Medicine Lodge, and War Bundle Feast.
