Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

"But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. [...]" "...There’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for."

Illustration by KitsuneArt, limited colour palette (blue and yellow/gold). Frodo and Sam from the Lord of the Rings movie (the Two Towers) standing in the ruins of Osgiliath, holding hands. On top of their heads Sam's words, handwritten by KitsuneArt: "There is some good in this world and it's worth fighting for".

“We’re in a foreign country. No one knows us. Pretend I’m a random hunk you’re trying to seduce.”

Kaoru rolled his eyes, but he also worried at the corner of his lip where his lip-ring used to be. “You’re an idiot.”

“Pretend I’m some random idiot you’re trying to seduce then,” Kojiro suggested, getting a slight twitch of lips from Kaoru that meant he was fighting the urge to actually admit he thought that was funny.

2026 gender census is out! They've been doing this for a while and are pretty reputable. This survey helps track trends in which terms people use to describe themselves by country and by other demographics, for instance. (I'm not affiliated with them.) Survey and more info: survey.gendercensus.com

Who can participate?

This survey intends to collect information from everyone who ISN'T adequately described by the "gender binary". According to the binary model of gender, everyone fits tidily into just one of these categories:

● Woman/girl - all the time, solely, and completely
↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey)
● Man/boy - all the time, solely, and completely
↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey)

Anyone who doesn't feel like they fit into one of these two boxes is invited to participate. There are no restrictions based on location, age, or anything else.

If you hesitate or struggle to place yourself into just one of those two boxes, or if you know for sure that these boxes were not made for you, please continue!

A graphic over a background of a rainbow gradient. Text reads, Buy Queer Creations! Support Queer Causes! with Duck Prints Press's 4th Annual Bundles for Charity Drive June 1 - 30th. At the bottom are three "categories" of thing, one a couple book covers in shades of blue and text that reads "25 general imprint stories," one a pile of book covers in shades of red and text that reads 15 explicit imprint stories, and the last artwork of two women, one a monster, touching noses, and text that reads 10 digital artworks.
