Discord, why. I'm just glad I had a good solid education (Lord of the Rings as bedtime stories), because thankfully I know not to mess around with orbs from sinister sources, especially ones that come attached to vague promises of success.

A Discord pop-up, displaying an odd, vaguely round symbol that I suppose from context is an "Orb", even though it's not spherical and has a four-pointed concave star on the surface, in addition to other hard-to-interpret geographical features.

In bold, it reads "New look, new challenges", and then below: "Now your Orbs are easier to track and easier to earn." And finally there's a button labeled "See Challenges".

No further explanation is provided.

I went to the City Lit production of Shane, and, I haven't seen the movie, but wow did they make it horny. That's 100% a unicorn hunting couple on that homestead. They also had the kid as adult narrating it instead of actually casting a child, and it super sounds like recounting a sexual awakening.

October thought: it's wild in retrospect how far into adulthood I was before I learned that the specific details of stereotypical movie monster conceptions I'd grown up around were largely not from the movies people referenced but from their sequels.

I frequently see "AI" boosters implying that LLMs are simply an innate and superior part of coding now, inescapable, and that literally all programmers agree with them. And, well. That, too, is a form of propaganda

Looking at my software peers in 2026 I see fatigued faces, I see frustration, and I see a lot of people looking for a way out of an industry that seems poised on the brink of collapse. LLMs are being pushed on us at every turn, most people seem at best frustrated by them, and ultimately they seem to appeal most to people who see the production of software as a purely mechanical means to an end. They are antithetical, however, to the idea of software as a craft, or something requiring both initial and ongoing care. As an expression of the soul.

Jesus fucking Christ. It's possible that making CPUs go this fast was a mistake. (Normal followers: this is unfortunately why getting security patches in your operating system is important, and I'm sorry that they so often come bundled with terrible new features that no one wants.)

A problem I have with the use of "companion" for sufficiently serious (and apparently on some level exclusive?) romantic relationships between vampires in the otherwise very fun Interview with the Vampire series is that, unfortunately, I have also watched Mr. Show.

Who do I know in Chicago who'd be interested in the Carl Sagan documentary? www.chicagofilmfestival.com/film/carl-sa... (Ideally on Sunday the 25th when it's a little cheaper.) I didn't grow up on him, but a lot of influential people in my life did, and I feel like I should see this for their sake.

The Emma Frost x Miss Piggy comic has hit the internet and it's so, so, so much more magnificent than I ever could have hoped for

Emma Frost: "Emma Frost, darling. I'm a telepath. May I read your mind to ascertain if you're telling the truth?"

Miss Piggy: "But of course, darling I am an open book, a tell-all memoir."

Emma Frost telepathically witnessing the entirety of Miss Piggy's life.

Wolverine: "Frost? She legit?"
Emma Frost: "She's..She's... She's everything. And I would die for her."

It’s bisexuality visibility day! When I love to share the Villa Farnesina bisexual visibility fresco, commissioned in the early 1500s by the Italian Renaissance artist Sodoma, depicting Alexander the Great between his wife Cassandra and boyfriend Hephaestion. Bisexuality has always been a thing!

Fresco of a sumptuous bedroom. In the middle Alexander draped in blue and gold robes is offering a crown to Cassandra who is lounging naked in a canopy bed. To the right Hephaestion also naked watches while standing in a sexy pose.

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

Okay, if you called these highly generic JRPGs of their era you wouldn't be wrong (though the second one's puzzles felt unique at the time), but they do feature Erim, probably my second-favorite fictional death goddess. (I do have highly specific tropes I return to, inscrutable as they may be.)

Years after rereading the first two Earthsea books, I finally read The Farthest Shore. I don't remember if I read it as a kid-- it wouldn't've made the (very trans) impression The Tombs of Atuan did, and as a kid a narrative about extreme, socially-corrosive fear of death would've been a hard sell?

As today is Undertale's 11th birthday, I'm thinking about just how good Toby Fox is at writing dialog concerning non-binary people that is evocative instead of awkward. Like, consider Toriel and Asgore's use of "my child", how it makes them feel appropriately solemn. Or Susie's use of "dumbass".
