Why should we clean the air in schools? - Reduces pollutants which cause asthma, multiple cancers, and dementia. - More resilient to airborne disease and pandemics We need health-based standards for air quality in schools. Fund ventilation filtration and maintenance. #HIAS2026

It's that (second) time of the year in Toronto when it makes sense to use as much outdoor air as possible in buildings. At the office. Breathing zone CO2 611 ppm at 10:45 AM
Aranet 4 Home meter on top of a task light reading 611 parts per million of carbon dioxide, 21.8 degrees celsius temperature, 49% relative humidity

🛡️ As flu season approaches, air filtration remains an important layer of protection against infectious diseases. IHEP member Jeff Siegel @engineering.utoronto.ca) explains how high-efficiency air filtration can help reduce airborne pathogens in shared indoor spaces.

Mask up in #NYC, and cancel what you're doing to get your booster today. Kings County is raging with COVlD, per today's CDC update. PMC estimates 1 in 20 residents actively infectious, as of the most recent data on Sep 12. pmc19.com/map We have warned of this for weeks.

"Indoor spaces as active protectors of respiratory health" now published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, led by Brent Stephens and Jerry Krishnan. academic.oup.com/ajrccm/artic... Free preprint at drive.google.com/file/d/1nrzL...
Opportunity to transform the quality of indoor air. The figure illustrates how indoor environments can transition from passive spaces to active
protectors of respiratory health through integrated sensing of airborne pollutants, pathogens, and allergens; occupant feedback; and automated responses to improve IAQ. These capabilities could also provide high-resolution environmental data that can deepen our understanding of the pathobiology and adverse health effects of poor IAQ on pulmonary, cardiovascular, neurocognitive, and metabolic disorders across the lifespan.

Study of 2.7 million marathon finishing times finds association with NO2, not PM2.5. Each 0.5 ppb increase in NO2 was associated with 1.56 min and 1.43 min slower time for women and men, respectively. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42668336/
Race-day air pollution concentrations across six World Marathon Majors, 2010–2024. (A) NO₂ and (B) PM₂.₅ concentrations (µg/m³) by marathon and year. Each cell represents one race-year event and shows the marathon location or course in relation to the corresponding CAMS model grid cell from which the race-day pollution concentration was extracted. The outlined line within each cell represents the marathon course where route data were available; for Berlin and Tokyo, the race location is shown schematically. The background shading represents the spatial distribution of pollutant concentrations within and around the relevant CAMS grid cell, while the number in the lower-right corner gives the race-day concentration assigned to that event.

A surge of COVID-19 infections is happening in multiple states in the U.S. and has been building for the past month, according to the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative, led by @michael-hoerger.bsky.social.  The PMC produces weekly COVID-19 heatmaps of the U.S. based on wastewater data.
Maps of the U.S. from the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative from the past month showing a growing level of COVID-19 infections from wastewater data in multiple states.

It's worth the effort to avoid getting COVID-19 or other airborne infections:
- mask up in public indoor spaces
- ventilate the air
- purify your air with air purifiers
- and move events outside or to virtual
