i will cop to having believed this when i was younger; i mistakenly believed that being exposed to the barbarism would make people turn away from it. now that anyone can watch any kind of barbarism they want on demand and we see what it does to them, i have changed my position.

My kids’ school has been aggressively working to reduce fights. With some success.

Light and Nova Swing live in my head like a splinter. I honestly couldn’t describe them well, but there are parts of each of his books that resonate.

Apparently he can tolerate just a little intolerance. As a treat. I had to take a number of humanities classes for my engineering school degree, it was great. I learned a lot and found it to be immensely helpful.

A screencap of account description for Mike Ross.

40 years ago tonight, ALF premiered on TV. Happy 40th Birthday, Alf. I hope all the cats in Melmac Heaven are hot n' spicy, just how you like 'em.

Panel 1: ET's Asogian starship landing on a strange planet

Panel 2: ET walks down the ramp, smiling, ready to get his botany on

Panel 3: ET sees a bunch of ALFs boiling a cat. This is Melmac

Panel 4: ET immediately walks back up ramp, his little buns showing

I wound up volunteering for a couple of different sports as my kids were growing up and it is a *lot*. One time my kid decided halfway through the season he didn’t want to play anymore and it sucked. Some of the parents are great, but some are psychopaths.

Similar to Eklutna as well. But the process behind both of those were extensive. Alaskan engineering is adjacent to space exploration.

Gillman @gillman.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

Something needs to be done and the HESCO barriers are a temporary option. I’m concerned about the “Shark Tank” analogy and the idea that there is an engineering solution that can be done swiftly, effectively, and economically. As far as I know this will be an unprecedented engineering project.

The sandbags comment was shit talk and o shouldn’t have done that in this case. That timeline you linked was much more realistic. It may have been a case of a press conference miscommunication.

120

Gillman @gillman.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

Seriously. Two weeks is the proposal turn around time for sandbags during an actual flood.

Gillman @gillman.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

I went to pull the RFQ and the database is down for maintenance until 12:00 EST. No one will even look at it until Monday morning.

020

Gillman @gillman.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

It will eventually as the glacier recedes, but I can’t speak how long that takes. My understanding is that everyone is learning about this as they go and the datapoints only happen with the flood. Which makes a three week time period even more insane.

210

Gillman @gillman.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

Not that many, the floods had been of moderate severity until the last 4 years.

120

Gillman @gillman.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

I’ve worked on proposals for USACE projects and this timeline is for emergency, spot repairs, not mining a tunnel next to the giant glacier in catastrophic retreat. The geotechnical and mining engineering will be something never attempted.

130

Gillman @gillman.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

Posting a RFQ and expecting bids in three weeks is an *insane* timeline. They will post the RFQ, which may be very detailed, and then you have one week to distill and ask any outstanding questions. Then you have two weeks to do estimation and write a proposal to safely drain the Basin every year.

The jetpens recommendations are spot on. I avoid Goulet Pens and Noodlers ink due to ownership issues. If want to buy multiple pens, Japanese nibs tend to be one size smaller than the same size from a European company. A fine nib from Bock is close to a medium from Pilot in my experience.

The next #Embroidery will be a nest full of snow goose eggs, just waiting to be hunted! It’s the second of four door prizes we’ll bring to the BARC Science Fair later this summer. I think I’ll add some wool to make the downy feathers surrounding the eggs.
