Golly. Watching newsnight on catchup and surprised to see Max Headroom. Unless someone’s got “prettify me” turned on their remote interview camera. Surely not.

What’s a freak? It’s anyone or anything worth talking about, and peering at, for its exposed so-called ‘weirdness’. Those best friends in Central Perk cafe are freaks (and that’s before the Meat Trifle). That Lear bloke who cast out his loving youngest daughter for not being a toady.  Dracula, well - obviously. Madame Bovary - a monster, and delicious. Horror doesn’t have the monopoly on freaks and that, friends, is very helpful indeed.

Place and space to write

Place and space to write
I’m sitting on a late night train out of Bristol - my other-home since I moved to Bath from London in the economically adventurous summer of 2007. The plan was to be here for just one year, then return. But both Bath and Bristol were too creatively welcoming for me to be able to resist. Creativity demands headspace (in Norwegian, “krever” - akin to “craves”).

'Ye' in names such as 'Ye Olde Inn' was originally pronounced 'the'. The pronunciation with y is due to a misinterpretation. 'Ye' originated as a second-best way of writing 'þe', þ being thorn, the original English letter for the th sound. Click my new infographic to read the story of thorn:

The origin of the word ‘iron’ is shrouded in mystery. It comes from a Proto-Germanic word that was most probably borrowed from Proto-Celtic *īsarnom, the ancestor of Irish ‘iarann’. The Celts were skilful metal workers. However, tracing it further back is hard. My new graphic shows 4 hypotheses:

In 1997, Tory MP Rupert Allason lost his seat to a Lib Dem by 12 votes. A week before the election he and his team failed to tip waitstaff after having dinner at a restaurant leading to all of them collectively agreeing to vote Lib Dem. That was 14 votes. This is very, very common.
