Happy weekend! Here’s a 3,500 year-old Minoan clay flask decorated with a wide-eyed octopus! 🐙❤️ From Palaikastro, Crete. Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows a frontal view of a clay flask with warm-yellow coloured slip with black hand painted decoration depicting an octopus. The octopus is swimming diagonally with eight writhing, sucker-lined arms covering the surface of the flask. It stares out at the viewer with wide, almost cartoon-like eyes. Additional black painted motifs include sea urchins, tritons, small rocks and seaweed. Minoan decoration depicting sea motifs is known by scholars as the 'Marine Style'. The flask measures 27 cm (about 10.5 inches) in height. It has a short spout at the top with a small loop handle at either side and a small base so that it can stand upright.

“Its shape is somewhat unusual, constructed by slipping together, while still leather hard (clay that is not quite dry), two shallow plates which had been made on a fast spinning potter’s wheel and with highly refined clay. The circular bases of these shallow plates are still visible in the center of both sides of the flask” (Smart History article “Octopus Vase” by Dr Senta German https://smarthistory.org/octopus-vase/)

The flask was excavated in 1903 at a Bronze Age settlement site at Palaikastro. The excavations between 1902 and 1906, were run by R. Bosanquet and R.M. Dawkins from the British School of Athens. The flask is part of the collections at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Heraklion, Crete.

I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

Your gentle reminder that the selection at @bookshop.org is just as good as at Amazon, and that using them doesn’t enrich someone who’s never missed an opportunity to fall on his knees and kiss an authoritarian’s jackboots. Seriously, what’s the point of “fuck you” money if you’re this servile?

This was a pretty small protest, but it honestly seemed incredibly effective. I don’t think that they’ve done this before, the only time I’ve been to a protest at this building was on a weekend. I really don’t think these workers liked being shamed!

ICE is already showing up near voting sites, bolstering lawsuit against armed agents at polls

Among the newest examples is an ICE detention that took place in the same area California voters had to pass through to reach a ballot drop box.

Today, the Trump administration finalized a rollback of fuel economy standards for passenger cars and trucks. This move effectively kills the nation's CAFE standards, a program that has saved drivers $321 billion in fuel costs since 2010. Read UCS Statement: act.ucs.org/46NApCk

“The federal government’s decision to gut fuel economy standards is a handout to automakers and oil companies that will strap American consumers already struggling with an affordability crisis...Weakening these standards means drivers will spend more on fuel while having fewer options to choose efficient vehicles."

As the Trump administration’s enforcement net widens to target and arrest political dissidents, families, and even U.S. citizens, we must recognize the role criminalizing narratives have played in leading us to our present slide into authoritarianism.

When we concede fundamental rights like due process for some, we begin to concede those rights for all. When we fight only for those immigrants who have not yet been labeled “criminal,” we’ll find ourselves unprepared when authoritarians inevitably stamp that label on more and more of us.

To flip the Senate, Democrats need to pick up 4 seats. 5 if you count the Fetterman problem. This can’t be emphasized enough: Michigan is a must-protect seat. Lose it, and we’d need to flip another seat just to make up the loss.

A complex, swirling pattern of lighter and darker clouds. One large system, angled to the upper left in this scene, is a tawny brown colour and is elongate. Another, more circular storm system is at lower centre, and is a grey–greenish colour. The background swirls are various shades of grey to blue; small, white features dot the scene.
