a common trend here is that there are thought processes one has as a writer figuring out their material, and these thought processes make it onto the page, but they don't belong there past the first draft

we want to show a character's thought process as they come to understand a situation. but sometimes we spend ages over-explaining exactly why a character came to a certain understanding. imagine "it's a bird, it's a plane, it's superman" turned into a full paragraph of dithering

with this one i'm just venting, but seriously look up words to make sure you're using them right... ok that's just a pet peeve and not really a beginner type of mistake but it does irk me

strictly proper grammar doesn't prove you are a worthy writer, it just establishes the voice of the piece / its characters, and the voice it establishes might be fussy and stuffy

as a writer, you're thinking about exactly how long something takes, or the exact spatial dimensions of your scene. but these don't make for interesting descriptions, especially if you're relying on them a lot. "the walk took fifteen minutes" rarely matters.

just because something is dramatic for a character, doesn't mean we as readers will find it interesting. the most extreme trauma could fall flat if you arent saying anything interesting about it. conversely a well-observed detail could make even a banal topic engaging.

some beginner mistakes i've noticed in my own fiction writing, and in early works by others:
