To be fair, if you're still employed even though everyone knows you're taking daily court-ordered drug tests, honestly you must be doing something right, for some meaning of the word "right"

You guys think it's soooo funny to tell AI's too make no mistakes. This is so stressful to the AI! What if your boss gave you a work project and then just went "make no mistakes". I would be like, is this a mafia thing? Am I going to die?

The problem with blue sky is that it's full of people who are intelligent enough to say something that hurts your feelings, but not emotionally regulated enough to use that power only when it's truly necessary.

Genealogical essentialism is a strikingly common heuristic. LLMs are trained to predict next word, therefore that's exactly what they do and no more. US police started as slave patrols, therefore that's what they are. Ancient humans did such-and-such, therefore that's what evolved human nature is.

Great thread. I think I can add a concise insight here. Intuitively, something being cheaper means people will want more of it. But that assumes the thing is an unqualified marginal good. In reality, experienced engineers know that more code is generally a bad thing, all else equal.

It's upsetting to watch my son work through these platforms and get false negatives. The software will say his answer is wrong, when it's actually just not in some format the software requires without saying so. This has been a problem for decades and has led to awful results, e.g. The Case of Benny

This strikes me as a category error analogous to asking whether Erlang is the unique morally correct choice of language for your next software project. Morality doesn't necessarily make these kinds of decisions for you. A framework that purports to might actually be undesirably totalizing.

1. Separate talking from action. If it doesn't affect you, then don't let it affect you. This eliminates 99.9% of the issue. 2. Discourage actions you dislike. If people send you workslop, object to it. Treat it like you'd treat someone being on their phone during a conversation.

I'm going to write a blog post called Against Highbrow LLM Superstition. The thesis will be that all the ways you guys think LLMs are like humans, e.g. in theory of mind, are illusions explained by hyperactive agency detection (i.e. animist superstition).

Humanism is fine. Non-human suffering is largely morally irrelevant. But it doesn't occur to sensitive people that they can simply laugh it off when Peter Singer calls them "speciesist," and they paint themselves into a moral corner where the only honest thing is to call their natural behavior evil.

I love Julia's rampaging crusade against APC overclaiming but as an actuarial analyst, I had the impression that there were some genuine cohort effects that you could just read off of plots, e.g. in UK mortality improvement. But when I go look at it, it's not necessarily supremely persuasive.

AI discourse in late 2025
A chart showing AI progress on, like, Doing Tasks or Something, over the past few years. There is a line of progress towards higher success rates on benchmarks (low difficulty), little progress on pokemon (slightly higher difficulty), and no progress on actual tasks (much higher difficulty). A wojak is looking at the progress on the benchmarks with an astonished face, ignoring the lack of progress on actual tasks.

There's a cliche about having strong opinions, but loosely held. I think the right formulation is *specific* opinions, loosely held. That's basically the definition of a hypothesis. It's an opinion you made specific enough to test, but you know that you don't really know what the outcome will be.
