Yesterday, we celebrated German Unity at Canterbury Cathedral. 37 years ago, brave East Germans demanded freedom & democracy, peacefully bringing down the Iron Curtain. Democracy isn't guaranteed. We must learn from our history, defend democracy and stand together against division.

On the anniversary of the horrific Hamas terror attacks of 7 October, Germany stands firmly by Israel's side. We want Israelis and Palestinians to be able to live in peace and security. This is best achieved through a two-state solution. We will combat antisemitism in all forms.

Visiting Edinburgh International Festival, where I even got to see the @berliner-philharmoniker.de play, has been an absolute personal highlight. Scottish-German cultural ties are thriving, with many German acts at the festivals, especially the Edinburgh Fringe - and also the Tattoo.

In Scotland, I also visited German space startup HyImpulse. There are great 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇩🇪 space opportunities, including in connection with the SaxaVord Spaceport! HyImpulse is planning a test launch from SaxaVord in October using a suborbital rocket.

Germany stands by the International Criminal Court. It has exposed the most serious crimes against humanity and held those responsible to account. If there are shortcomings then they should be criticised. However, there is no a reason to fundamentally question this institution.

77 years ago today, the Grundgesetz (Basic Law) was promulgated. It's Germany's bulwark against authoritarianism - protecting democracy, human dignity, freedom & the rule of law. It was at the 1948 London Conference that 🇬🇧 & other Western allies called for the constitution.

In Guernsey, we discussed 🇩🇪🇬🇬 ties - past and present. One year after Biberach & Guernsey signed the Framework of Friendship Arrangement, it's good to see lively exchange between young musicians. At the German military cemetery I laid a wreath in memory of those buried there.

81 years ago, World War II ended in Europe. 8 May marks Germany’s defeat and its liberation from the inhumanity & tyranny of the Nazi regime. Germany was then given a new chance – to develop into today’s democracy, firmly anchored in the EU & NATO. I am deeply grateful for this.
