$Margaret McGirr’s letter (“AI can lend a hand, but it will struggle to replace one”, July 21) and Chine McDonald’s guest column (“This retro revival is more than a longing for the past”, Opinion, August 7) both touch (sic) on something that should be obvious, but is carefully ignored by almost everyone in the tech world. Namely that our intelligence is embodied, evolved and biological, and inseparable from our bodies. The brain’s job is to control the body in the world; it is the last organ to develop. Every square centimetre of our hands (and of the rest of our skin) contains about a 170 touch sensors or nerve endings, sensitive to different kinds of touch: a slap, a burn, a caress, a hug — each of which travels to different parts of the midbrain, prompting the appropriate response. Quickly to the autonomic nervous system for something dangerous; more slowly via a different channel for something carrying meaning. In addition to the hand’s limitless versatility, it is self-repairing, regulates its own temperature, knows without being programmed how much pressure to exert on an egg, a tennis ball or a day-old chick, and can fuse neurologically to whatever it holds. So when we put a glass down on the table or slide a knife through an apple, we feel the table, or the apple, not the glass or handle in our hand (try it!). Finally, and most urgently, the entire human body — including the hands — does everything on 25 or so watts of completely renewable energy: a tiny fraction of what a humanoid robot, even one of the current primitive iteration of robots, needs. The “retro revival” is thus not cultural nostalgia. It’s millions of years of evolution crying out to be heard, before we suppress it totally in the service of an automated — and dead — planet. I can't put into words how I feel towards the media who, yet again, have hounded someone to take their own life. And the academia who shrugged. For the days to come, who will truly reflect on how they have contributed to depriving two children of growing up with their father?

Politainment dominated when we needed journalists and experts explaining the issues, but there's not much profit in that. Ordinary people are confused and stressed. Some become anxious, and some turn confusion into anger. Chronic stress is a major factor in many conditions the NHS treats.

I've not seen any interest in the WNC Hackleton and Roade by election on here or anywhere. I've had so many leaflets and door knockers. The Liberal Democrat and Green candidates both seem sound. Told the Tories exactly why it's a no, but still no Labour or Reform door knockers as yet.

I met the Lib Dem candidate for my local council by election, and he's sound. He mentioned sorting out potholes, so I told him proper public transport and active travel would not only reduce them but would improve everyone's lives, especially children's, and so much more. He actually listened.

"News" is "fast moving," but accurate information about current affairs is what it is, and the BBC used to do it brilliantly across the board. We need journalism back at the heart of The Today Programme and stop the presenter monologue followed by either a soft soap or haranguing interview.

The first "credible" anti vax person I met was the midwife who led the NCT antenatal class, recommended by Poole NHS. She made us feel like we'd would be poisoning our babies, and some mothers chose not to vaccinate. Antenatal yoga was just the same. That was in 1997.
