I was deep into studying the Burma Railway at university before learning of an identical scenario in WWI when Turkey tried to build one in Iraq, with slave labour killing thousands of POWs just the same

Even then… if I smash a shop window and hoist a jerry can, the reporting won’t read that “some legal experts have suggested that arson may be prohibited”. Laws in their intention are broadly understood.

The current US government is buying TV ads telling people to vote for them, which is very much illegal. The NYT reporting phrases this as “Some ethics experts have argued that the Trump administration is violating federal laws”. Newspapers are useless when they don’t say what is happening.

I didn’t get Rocky Horror when I first saw it years ago. Then saw a screening recently in a dilapidated Portuguese castle, which was perfect, and the whole thing clicked, the daring and the signficance. What stood out most was Tim Curry’s delivery - immaculate. Well played.

Powerful and important letter about artificial so-called intelligence from Sheila Hayman from Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge, in the FT today
Margaret McGirr’s letter (“AI can lend a hand, but it will struggle to replace one”, July 21) and Chine McDonald’s guest column (“This retro revival is more than a longing for the past”, Opinion, August 7) both touch (sic) on something that should be obvious, but is carefully ignored by almost everyone in the tech world. Namely that our intelligence is embodied, evolved and biological, and inseparable from our bodies.
The brain’s job is to control the body in the world; it is the last organ to develop.
Every square centimetre of our hands (and of the rest of our skin) contains about a 170 touch sensors or nerve endings, sensitive to different kinds of touch: a slap, a burn, a caress, a hug — each of which travels to different parts of the midbrain, prompting the appropriate response. Quickly to the autonomic nervous system for something dangerous; more slowly via a different channel for something carrying meaning.
In addition to the hand’s limitless versatility, it is self-repairing, regulates its own temperature, knows without being programmed how much pressure to exert on an egg, a tennis ball or a day-old chick, and can fuse neurologically to whatever it holds.
So when we put a glass down on the table or slide a knife through an apple, we feel the table, or the apple, not the glass or handle in our hand (try it!).
Finally, and most urgently, the entire human body — including the hands — does everything on 25 or so watts of completely renewable energy: a tiny fraction of what a humanoid robot, even one of the current primitive iteration of robots, needs.
The “retro revival” is thus not cultural nostalgia.
It’s millions of years of evolution crying out to be heard, before we suppress it totally in the service of an automated — and dead — planet.

Conflicted! The previous one was a surprise favourite, it was unexpectedly witty as well as having the Scorpion-Subzero epic. This one, the game dynamics were fun, but the script aside from Kano felt like LLM shit.

Also, having worked on the minutiae of complex projects with book designers, it’s so interesting to get up close to what they do, and how decisions and creative leaps are made. Rare to get a look inside that process, there should be more of it

fields. Instead, he apparently laced into the company. According to the Financial Times, Eggers told the staff:

“The effect of ChatGPT on educators’ lives is catastrophic. Whether you intended to do it or not, you’ve made every teacher’s life infinitely more difficult than it was two years ago. So, just let that settle in… If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they’ll never learn to write. And their voice is stolen from them. They’ll never have the ability to say their truth and tell their own story. And that’s silencing an entire generation or two.”

Presumably the vampire landlord would have previously visited the property during purchase. Do they need to be invited if the home is not inhabited? Does their invitation lapse with each new lease?
