A few years ago, my son’s daycare class heard about Thrilller secondhand (one kid’s older cousin had shown him) and treated it as a documentary. It took months to convince him that Michael Jackson was a real person and he had died years ago. “No, he thought he was dead but he was really alive.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Protests have been met with unprecedented police brutality & mass detention: 1,949 on the 1st October, 90% minors. This exceeds daily arrest peaks during May 1968, Yellow Vests & 2005 & 2023. 215 injured kids. 15-year-old lost a hand; another an eye to a and another suffered a fractured jaw.

I read the ending and I wanted to koolaid man through a wall!!
Screenshot of article which reads: To restore a functioning and
pluralistic democracy in the United States, reversing over a decade of
democratic backsliding in the world’s oldest democracy, the thing to
“fix” is not polarization. Polarization is the country’s immune response
to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success,
reputation, and democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this minority faction to have greater control.Screenshot of article which reads: But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome.
When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for ev-
eryone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those
who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern
for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the
solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American his-
tory—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed
by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to
defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the
leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

These dynamics are not segregated into those students who choose to be members of a fraternity or sorority. At Cornell, that's around 1/3 of the student population (>1k/year). At that level, the culture permeates every part of student life, whether or not you actively participate.

Someone said to me that there are frats everywhere, so why do I seem to have more ire for spaces like Cornell? Money & power. About 1/10 Cornell students have families in the top 1% of income. The institutions are by them, for them. This takes every other dynamic and amplifies it times over.

You cannot hack your way out of a lack of representation.
Figure from https://www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/2026/09/30/how-well-synthetic-samples-replicate-public-opinion/

Showing higher error rates in groups usually underrepresented in surveys, including HS or less education.

From the article:

"The synthetic sample performed especially poorly when it came to replicating the responses of groups including:
Republicans and Republican leaners

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

We live in one of the richest counties in the country and it is astounding how early these dynamics show up. I'm talking daycare, the kids barely able to talk yet the parents already setting the stage allowing (enabling) behavior that is dangerous.

It's bleak and demoralizing. My pre-2025 biosketch had "diversity" 26 times in paper, grant, consortia, and committee titles, which were then all scrubbed last year for submissions. And then once you get the money, the promise to not do any "DEI" or else it all gets taken away.

One thing with the new sciencv is that it makes language scrubbing virtually impossible on some fronts. 🤷🏻‍♀️ FWIW, the advice I’ve been given is that it only matters for public facing documents.

Again speaking in the academic case: bad reading is downstream of an audience that does not require good reading. Things that I'd guess contribute to that include: increased specialization (fractures the audience), metrics based evaluation (diminishes importance of audience feedback)
