George Saunders: (on.substack.com/p/model-beha...)
Q: Have you spent time trying to write or revise with AI? Is there an experiment that would be interesting enough to try?

Saunders: I have not. Not for a second. To me, this whole idea of using AI to write is . . . anathema. A thing to be most radically avoided.

Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that? Not even in an email and certainly not in a short story or novel.

To be fair that price included an equally first-generation Apple Imagewriter. Tucked in my mess of a personal archive I still have a few high school papers that in their dot-matrix approximations of fonts feel like handling the Dead Sea scrolls.

We had a legit first-gen Macintosh, the 128K version, that Dad bought from someone at his machine tool company for what still feels like a disturbingly high number of 1985-1986 dollars. It was used for many school papers and Flight Simulator sessions until the board died in mid-1991.

E30 Sport Evolution. Motor punched out to 2.5 liters for 238hp, racing-pattern 5-speed, lots of little Porsche RS-style aero and weight-saving tricks scattered about, more natural-looking 16-inch wheels. 600 built in either red or black. Absurd market value today. Black, please.

I suppose us corrupted limp-wristed sybarites who prefer such unnecessary frivolities as wind-up windows can get a TR4, which also has one of those recklessly modern column switches.
Dashboard (literally a board, and a rather pretty one at that) and primary controls of a Triumph TR4.

Yes, blank canvas and all, but would the Slate be more appealing if the base was plain plumber-truck white with unpainted steelies?

Not quite that much of a joke, but not much better. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_...:
Quote from the Wikipedia entry on Bernie Sanders (footnotes removed for formatting convenience):

While a member of Congress, Sanders sponsored 15 concurrent resolutions and 15 Senate resolutions. Of those he co-sponsored, 218 became law. While he has consistently advocated for progressive causes, Politico wrote that he has "rarely forged actual legislation or left a significant imprint on it". According to The New York Times, "Big legislation largely eludes Mr. Sanders because his ideas are usually far to the left of the majority of the Senate ... Mr. Sanders has largely found ways to press his agenda through appending small provisions to the larger bills of others." During his time in the Senate, he had lower legislative effectiveness than the average senator, as measured by the number of sponsored bills that passed and successful amendments made. Nevertheless, he has sponsored over 500 amendments to bills, many of which became law. The results of these amendments include a ban on imported goods made by child labor; $100 million in funding for community health centers; $10 million for an outreach program for servicemembers who have post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, depression, panic attacks, and other mental disorders; a public database of senior Department of Defense officials seeking employment with defense contractors; and including autism treatment under the military healthcare program Tricare.

Just out of curiosity dug into this a bit more and yeah, this is a '90s Chimaera interior which, I mean, my imagination can go to some gleefully smutty places but this one is just like no:

The irony is that vintage TVR interiors (this one's a 2500M) are some of the most fuckproof places on the planet.
