Since the number 86 is under discussion again, I took a look at an old dictionary of American slang. It gave "eighty-six" three definitions: "1. No, nix; nothing; there is none left; we don't have the item ordered.... 2. A glass of water. Some lunch-counter use, because there is no sale, ... 1/5

"eighty-six. 1. No, nix; nothing; there is none left; we don't have the item ordered. Common lunch-counter use; used by the cook to inform waiters that there is no more of a specific dish.
2. A glass of water. Some lunch-counter use, because there is no sale, nothing rung up on the cash register.
3. A person who is not to be served, as at a lunch counter, because he is thought to be undesirable or unable to pay; a person who is not to be served liquor, as at a bar, because he is or will become drunk and/or disorderly. 1944: '[He] was known as an "eighty-six," which in the patois of [liquor] dispensers means: "Don't serve him."' Fowler, 'Good Night', 191.
All uses because the term rhymes with 'nix.' Used by waiters, bartenders, etcetera, so that customers will not understand. See Appendix, Rhyming Slang."

They want to convince their followers that we are un-American, in the wrong country. But it’s them. THEY are in the wrong country. Their goals, plans, ideology are no less than an insurrection against the Second Founding - the constitutional framework for our country created after the Civil War.

I just had an odd Bluesky experience. I replied to a post and only a minute later it was reposted by a brand-new account ending in "swarmchat.ai". I looked into them a little and while I was doing that the account was deleted. All within ten minutes! I guess we need to watch out for AI bots now.
A message from Bluesky that shows the user a repost of something they had posted. In this case, it was reposted by a "swarmchat.ai" account that was closed by Bluesky a few minutes later.

Saying there must be trials isn't just an emotive aspiration. Congress can: - Create a new court (complying w/ 6A jury vicinage) - Give it jurisdiction over defined category of crimes - Also create dedicated prosecutors for the same - Strip SCOTUS of appellate jurisdiction It can be done.

Brief operational term of art 🧵 to help better define what we're experiencing. What we're experiencing is state terror. I've seen a lot of terms thrown around for what the Trump admin is doing w/ICE, CBP, & other federal law enforcement (LE). The now largely out of use term is state terror. 1/

also I spent the last year with an iron grip on the politics channel in our discord, specifically because I was not going to allow the story to become "we're all fucked, there is nothing we can do" we all had days of fear, of exhaustion, of just being too run down to hope... but NO DOOM.

It all sounded very woo-woo to me. But the science backs it up: if you think you won't succeed, you never even try. Your brain is building a hallucination of your world all the time. If you REALLY want to focus on something you can control, the stories you tell about the world and experiences are it

Common Sense, published 250 years ago today.
Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.

If you still need to share a link to a tweet, but don't want to send people to Musk's cesspool - replace "x" with "xcancel" in the tweet link. For example x.com/dril/status/... becomes xcancel.com/dril/status/... People will still see the tweet, but without going to Twitter.

The thing about organizations wanting people to RSVP for protests because contact lists are useful to them is absolutely true and it also has absolutely nothing to do with whether it's in your best interest to RSVP for a protest (it is not in your best interest).

From _The Complete Time Traveler: A Tourist's Guide to the Fourth Dimension_, by Blumenthal, Curley, and Williams. It's a humorous look at everyday time travel, published in 1988 (and 2038?). But even back then, the authors had Donald Trump's number. #timetravel #humor #2038 #1988 #alaska
The image is a scan from _The Complete Time Traveler_ which shows part of page 110. It is titled "Accent on the 20th Century".

"Pick a year. Any year. Get to know the local gossip, the customs, the slang expressions, the opinions of the well-informed. Visit your neighborhood ACCENT today."

Then there are a few lines about people and current events from each decade of the twentieth century that a time traveler should be familiar with. The list concludes with...

"1980s -- Why most Americans liked Ronald Reagan, and how to pretend you do too ... inside stories on Ted Turner, Jean Harris, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Pee Wee Herman.

"1990s -- Depression humor ... what to say if you meet a smoker ... working for a non-Japanese corporation ... attitudes toward Vice-President Trump's plan to sell Alaska back to Russia to resolve the national debt ... how to respond when people say that time travel is impossible."

PSA Neck gaiters are not masks. Neck gaiters are not effective at stopping the spread of airborne viruses. Masks, especially well-fitting ones are effective at preventing infection. Conflating the two is bad because it can encourage politicians to ban masks for the general public.

👀 Scoop: Trump and Republicans want USPS to sell off its brand new EVs and chargers. That would mean literally **ripping up post office parking lots** to auction off assets with no private-sector value. It’s buried in the Senate’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...
The Senate’s version of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill would see the General Services Administration take possession of the nearly 7,200 new postal EVs and associated infrastructure and put the assets up for auction. The proposal is unlikely to generate much revenue for the government; there is almost no private-sector interest in the mail trucks, and used EV charging equipment — built specifically for the Postal Service and already installed in postal facilities — generally cannot be resold.

“The funds realized by auctioning the vehicles and infrastructure would be negligible. Much of infrastructure is literally buried under parking lots, and there is no market for used charging equipment,” Peter Pastre, the Postal Service’s vice president for government relations and public policy, wrote to senators this month.
