![[...]Lanterns doesn't have anything particularly insightful or interesting to say about race or antiblackness. Not only because how miscast Pierre is as John Stewart, but their choice to name his darker-skinned father "John Stewart Senior" then build a narrative wherein the genetics of a person nets them the meritocracy of the Ring, and that chosen one happens to be the fairest person in the family outside of the mother.
What it does say, steps into what feels like the Zeze Beets justification for her taking the role of Stagecoach Mary, and struggles to justify the Marine backstory while also running in the other direction from it to avoid (proactive) criticism of John's association of the military (but I might be giving them too much credit).
More to the point, John's dynamic with his parents feels like a bad recreation of the Joe Morton/Kerry Washington scene from Scandal, but without any of that show's self-awareness or seasonal build-up (three episodes vs. three seasons).
