The problem isn't rogue #AI models, it's *negligent companies*. If a biomedical firm put their product in public water supply because they wanted to test it 'in the real world', they'd be treated as criminal at corporate & individual level. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

The Dickin Medal is the highest award that can be issued to animals in British military service. Bearing the words "We Also Serve" it has been awarded 75 times since its creation in 1943. Only one cat has ever received the award. This is the story of Able Seacat Simon, of HMS Amethyst. 🧵 1/25

Alternatively, The New Stanford Prison Experiment is a dystopian horror where you’re assigned to a seeming paradise that on the surface looks like an upscale outdoor mall for the fabulously wealthy but then you have to live in a box 45 miles away or in a Pearce Mitchell condo made of cardboard.

Silicon Valley types have been promising that a humanity ending AI superintelligence is just a few years away for...decades. It used to be called The Singularity, now it has rebranded as AGI. As with Rapture, it keeps not happening on schedule...but just you wait, this time it's definitely for real!

If Hugo continues to grow at this rate, by 2030 he will no longer fit in the barn. By 2050 he will have grown to the size of Godzilla and could crush humanity. But if we let the Chinese grow their own Hugo first that would be bad. This is why we must invest 100 trillion dollars in Hugo immediately.

Setting aside all the obvious stuff about this being an AI generated ad, what is being decided is called "cramming for the exam" and is a famously bad way to actually learn anything.

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.

A tetanus-diphtheria vaccine that doesn’t need a fridge has passed its first human trial. UK scientists reformulated a licensed shot using trehalose, the sugar that lets desert plants survive without water, keeping it stable for up to two years at 30°C. Gavi buff.ly/1kNIUHB #ShareGoodNewsToo

Sometimes society at large rejects certain ideas because they’ve been thoroughly shown to be wrong and also because they suck and the people who espouse them suck and when someone comes around arguing those ideas should be part of some edgy modern debate we can and should shun them and move on.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel, but articulated much better than I have been able to do this far. There are lots of pernicious systems that are already so deeply entrenched that non-participation seems largely symbolic. But in this case we can still resist the entrenchment. And should.

It's true that all the countries are mislabeled, and that the ivory coast is apparently landlocked now, BUT ALSO the country colors don't match their labels, one country has a label pointing to nothing, and Cameroon is, apparently, nowhere.

Don't worry, folks! Someone in the original Reddit thread has "solved" this "problem". You just tell chatGPT to not plagiarize, you see, and then everything is fine.
"I've run into this problem. The trick is to say "in the style of" - and then parentheses I always put, (but don't plagiarize)"

Surely it's obvious even to your averagely-able secondary school student that the purpose of writing an essay is the process of writing it, first, and the feedback on any gaps in their understanding that it reveals, secondarily. The artefact of the essay itself is... not the point?

Yes. The key issue is that social media should be regulated as essential public infrastructure rather than driven solely by shareholder value maximisation (which underpins a lot of the damaging algorithmic structuring) or by the whims of mad, racist oligarchs. All this is lost in the ban discourse.
