🚨New paper out in JEPP @jeppjournal.bsky.social 🎉 Women are underrepresented in local politics, and the problem isn't only their election but retention. In a survey experiment with 500+ English councillors, we find that family-friendly council policies increase women's static ambition. 🧵
The picture shows the article abstract: Women’s representation in European local governments remains stagnant at around one-third of councillors. One explanation for this longstanding gender gap relates to structural barriers blocking the supply of women candidates, including working practices which are not compatible with caring responsibilities. Yet, so far we do not know whether measures governments can implement to remedy this, including reimbursing care expenses and remote working, increase women’s political ambition. To answer this question, the study uses a survey experiment fielded to local councillors in England (N = 534). The survey manipulates exposure to a bundled set of family-friendly policies in a hypothetical council to identify the causal effect of such policies on static political ambition (councillors’ willingness to run for their current level of office), and explores heterogeneous effects by gender. The introduction of family-friendly policies significantly increases women’s, but not men’s, willingness to run for office again. Analysis of open-ended survey responses further reveals that women councillors more frequently brought up the difficulty of balancing care and work with a political role, while men were less likely to mention this. Overall, the study contributes new evidence about the important role that family policies might play in closing gender gaps in political ambition.

We often ask who wins elections. But who decides to run? New @electoralstudies.bsky.social w/@mhayes.bsky.social: Multi-member districts ⬆️ Black candidate emergence—and political empowerment matters. We revisit assumptions about US electoral design and show who enters the pipeline—not just who wins.

Happen to see that the openly gay leader of the D66 party is likely to lead the new government in the Netherlands? Curious how citizens evaluate lesbian and gay party leaders? My latest co-authored article exploring this question is now online (and open access)!

Lesbian and gay party leaders receive lower leadership evaluations than straight leaders in the UK, and the effects are consistent across genders. Interesting yet discouraging findings in our BJPS paper. @josephfcozza.bsky.social @gdilandro.bsky.social Andrea Aldrich @utgovernment.bsky.social

📰 Our research on the mental load is on CBS Mornings! 💥 In @jmfncfr.bsky.social, we find mothers manage 71% of family tasks—rising to 79% for daily routines. A powerful but often invisible form of inequality. Grateful to team up with @leahruppanner.bsky.social on this work -- more to come!

I am incredibly proud that my book, co-authored with Andrea Aldrich, is published. Using an original party leadership dataset from 11 parliamentary democracies, Andrea and I show that women candidates face a glass ceiling for leadership and quickly sink once elected (the quicksand theory).

🥳We got page nrs! 🤓In this CPS article, Rosie Shorrocks and I test mechanisms that according to modernization theory can explain modern gender gaps. 🧐Our results imply that women with different political views select into different life trajectories - in education, work, out of marriage. #polisci

In my new @bjpols.bsky.social, I show that the longstanding association between female labor force participation and ♀️ support for left-wing parties is conditional on their advocacy for gender equality in labor markets. Western Europe (1990-2019) Party behavior matters for the gender voting gap!
