I feel like it’s the same mind—albeit on a very different scale—of the kind of man who thinks, despite never playing tennis, that he could beat Serena Williams.

Resisting the urge to make my East German lecture in Music and the Cold War a 75-minute ode to how much of a bop Eisler’s “Auferstanden aus Ruinen” is. Easily my favorite national anthem. youtu.be/P1CyPjQQTAM?...

Got a new stove/oven delivered today (switching to that induction burner lifestyle) and nearly crashed out when I realized I couldn’t set it up without downloading a GODDAMN APP. So help me god if GE ever makes each burner a subscription I will burn this shit (with good old matches) to the ground.

It’s such a minor point in the grand scheme of how fucking appalling the Cornell gang rape case is, but I desperately want someone to leak the essays those privileged monsters wrote to get out of trouble because I’m willing to bet that at least fucking half of them used Chat GPT.

There are like 500 of these books and they all exist in an alternate universe where trying to win over white working class voters is a Bold Forbidden Insight rather than the guiding ideology of the entire party.

Don’t believe people who tell you ai can be liberatory or any other misappropriation of movement talk or justice frameworks. Find some people who are preparing to rebuild and cast your lot with them. Then read a bit more. Just keep your wits about you because they are trying to run game.

Briefly discussed the purpose and political utility of doing scholarship today in my grad seminar and it’s the first time I’ve ever lied to students, since I couldn’t tell them the true and honest purpose of scholarship is to come up with niche references and jokes to shitpost on academic Bluesky.

Spent all day yesterday preparing a lecture structured around an analysis of Stravinsky’s Threni for Music and the Cold War, woke up at 3am, couldn’t get back to sleep, threw out the entire lesson and designed an in-class debate instead. Whose idea was it for me to teach all new preps this year????

Hi! I'm a university president, seeking advice about AI. On one hand, AI actively guts education and might kill everyone. But on the other hand, taking money from AI companies means becoming dependent on an industry that could crash at any moment. So should we go all in?

Kate O’Flynn gave the best performance of any show in any genre I’ve seen in the past five years and I would have maybe died a little bit inside if she hadn’t won the Emmy. I will always and forever stan her as Patricia.

Today in Music and the Cold War, we're talking about cultural exchange (broadly) before spending the next several weeks getting into the weeds, which means I finally get to teach this slick version of "Katyusha" that the Nat King Cole trio recorded in 1945 www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nfz...

Flock is trying to recruit ARTISTS on job recruiting sites. I saw this while helping an artist friend look for part-time jobs and nearly vomited. “Visual storytelling” — What in the Leni Riefenstahl is this shit?
The whole nauseating post:

Creative Director
Flock Z • 4.0 *
Job details
• $200,000 - $250,000 a year
Stock options
• Full-time
• Remote in Los Angeles, CA
Full job description
The Problem
Flock's creative group is expanding as the company raises its standard of visual storytelling and campaign execution across brand, film, and digital experiences. This momentum creates a need for unified creative leadership to turn complex technology and public safety outcomes into compelling, human-centered narratives.

Once again, I must point to the official statement from Toyota. www.nytimes.com/2001/11/23/a...
A clip from the NYT that reads: “Somewhat less laconic was Wade Hoyt, Toyota's spokesman in New York, who put the best corporate spin on the situation this week. 'It is not our proudest product placement,' he said. 'But it shows that the Taliban are looking for the same qualities as any truck buyer: durability and reliability.'”

The replies to this are so fascinating to read. 9/11 was my earliest civic memory, but I was also only nine-years-old at the time, so I didn’t understand what was happening. Every year near the anniversary, I feel like I’m still trying to understand the affective experience those around me had.

Almost every young woman academic I know (including myself) has been targeted and belittled, sexually or otherwise, at some point by a higher-ranking man. After the state of the job market, it’s probably the number two thing I warn prospective grad students about.

Despite having no affiliation with Syracuse, I remember this semester: my family and I were staying at that Sheraton after my stepdad had a terrible accident and was on life support for a few days at the hospital there before dying. All the while, freshmen were moving in to the rooms next door.

Meanwhile I know of senior scholars at premier institutions who’ve been investigated for plagiarism (on top of routinely abusing—and plagiarizing—junior scholars) who got off with a stern talking to and never made it to the public eye. I can’t qwhite figure out what’s different about them…

Always happy to chat with prospective graduate students, but one tip for all: if you're going to email a professor to say you've read their work and want to apply, maybe make sure that the work in question is 1) theirs, and 2) actually exists—neither of which is true in this case!
