Sorry :( it’s especially hard because, living in a Sharks household and teaching at UW, I do feel compelled to get a Laika Edwards San Jose jersey… but they’re just not as nice as Vegas!

Not only is this an unhinged way to frame it, it completely ignores the fact that some of us are estranged from a parent because that parent was emotionally and physically abusive! That estrangement is not simply some “adolescent rebellion”—it’s a matter of safety!

(My landlord was great and my home is great and I am very happy and fortunate to own it but I did not anticipate needing to buy 28 cubic feet of mulch this early in the morning when I signed the paperwork.)

Just ran into my former landlord who sold me my house in August at Menards at 8:30am and he gave me such a knowing smile that I’d imagine is the smile someone who catfishes a senior citizen out of thousands of dollars might have when the check clears. Like, welcome to hell (home ownership), sucker!

Resisting the urge to make my East German lecture in Music and the Cold War a 75-minute ode to how much of a bop Eisler’s “Auferstanden aus Ruinen” is. Easily my favorite national anthem. youtu.be/P1CyPjQQTAM?...

Got a new stove/oven delivered today (switching to that induction burner lifestyle) and nearly crashed out when I realized I couldn’t set it up without downloading a GODDAMN APP. So help me god if GE ever makes each burner a subscription I will burn this shit (with good old matches) to the ground.

It’s such a minor point in the grand scheme of how fucking appalling the Cornell gang rape case is, but I desperately want someone to leak the essays those privileged monsters wrote to get out of trouble because I’m willing to bet that at least fucking half of them used Chat GPT.

Don’t believe people who tell you ai can be liberatory or any other misappropriation of movement talk or justice frameworks. Find some people who are preparing to rebuild and cast your lot with them. Then read a bit more. Just keep your wits about you because they are trying to run game.

Briefly discussed the purpose and political utility of doing scholarship today in my grad seminar and it’s the first time I’ve ever lied to students, since I couldn’t tell them the true and honest purpose of scholarship is to come up with niche references and jokes to shitpost on academic Bluesky.

Spent all day yesterday preparing a lecture structured around an analysis of Stravinsky’s Threni for Music and the Cold War, woke up at 3am, couldn’t get back to sleep, threw out the entire lesson and designed an in-class debate instead. Whose idea was it for me to teach all new preps this year????

Hi! I'm a university president, seeking advice about AI. On one hand, AI actively guts education and might kill everyone. But on the other hand, taking money from AI companies means becoming dependent on an industry that could crash at any moment. So should we go all in?

Today in Music and the Cold War, we're talking about cultural exchange (broadly) before spending the next several weeks getting into the weeds, which means I finally get to teach this slick version of "Katyusha" that the Nat King Cole trio recorded in 1945 www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nfz...
