Reading through some of the top comments on the NYTs latest story about Zohran Mamdani
Yale from New Haven says: “This is insanely low, racist, and desperate. Glad to see they’ve just decided to be a tabloid. It sounds like he clarified it well enough with writing in “Ugandan.” Truly insane (and just unacceptable) that this was framed like this. Or reported at all! Who cares!”

Jennifer from Oregon says: “Please, please do not do hit pieces on this man who is one of the few sources of hope that most of us have in this country. Just stop.”PD from Brooklyn says: “This really does not feel newsworthy, when you see he made his best effort to clarify the check-box identity markers he was offered.”

Paul from Ohio says: “I’m a middle-aged white dude from the midwest. Not a socialist or communist, and never heard of Mr. Mamdani prior to this mayoral race.

But I have to say that the coverage of this guy, including by these reporters, seems biased against him.

Who cares what boxes he checked on a college application for a college to which he did not even get admitted? It tells us some things about some people. But none of them are Mr. Mamdani.”Taylor from New York says: “The media is desperately looking for anything they can use to smear this man. Adams and Cuomo have well-documented scandals that have landed them in legal trouble. How about we focus on the real corruption in this city”Ed the Rabbit from Baltimore says: “So you got a hot tip from a eugenicist and gave him anonymity in order to "out" an Asian person who was born in Africa as a person who checked some boxes on a form and thereby claimed to be "Asian" and "African American" before he officially became American, in an attempt to gain admission to a University his mother already worked at—and failed.

This is not your finest hour.”

Robin from Greenpoint says: “Yep. More qualities about Zohran that I identify with. More nuances I see reflected in more New Yorkers.”

I wrote about the Biden hullabaloo. newrepublic.com/article/1953...
All told, Biden was able to pursue another campaign out of Democratic deference, careerism, and complacency. There was no spell he cast over the party; nothing he himself did to stupefy and paralyze its leaders. Up and down the ladder, the shrewd and the merely timid, all of whom knew full well that he shouldn’t run again, each took measure of the situation and figured it was safest to do nothing until doing nothing became untenable—and for several weeks afterward.Prominent Democrats speaking out about all this a year ago would have been meaningful. Today, it means nothing. Denouncing Biden’s run now that he’s a political nonentity—out of office and perhaps very near death—isn’t taking a brave stand against the internal culture of the Democratic Party. It’s a reflection of it: a wholly cost-free and substantively empty way for opportunists to perform independence from the party now that the coast is clear and there are no toes of consequence to step on. Biden ran again, and is being condemned for running again, for the very same reasons.

I get "freedom = cars" in so many places but to me, a New Yorker, having a car seems so stifling. You have to figure out where to park, how to get gas, how to get home if you have 3 beers. What's actually freeing is being able to walk places and having trains that run wherever I want to go

*INITIAL FAA REPORT SAYS STAFFING WAS NOT NORMAL AT TOWER: NYT www.nytimes.com/live/2025/01...
Staffing was ‘not normal’ at airport tower, according to a preliminary F.A.A. report.
By Sydney Ember and Emily Steel
(New York Times) --
Staffing at the air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan National Airport was “not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic,” according to an internal preliminary Federal Aviation Administration safety report about the collision that was reviewed by The New York Times.
The controller who was handling helicopters in the airport’s vicinity Wednesday night was also instructing planes that were landing and departing from its runways. Those jobs typically are assigned to two controllers, rather than one.
This increases the workload for the air traffic controller and can complicate the job. One reason is that the controllers can use different radio frequencies to communicate with pilots flying planes and pilots flying helicopters. While the controller is communicating with pilots of the helicopter and the jet, the two sets of pilots may not be able to hear each other.
Like most of the country’s air traffic control facilities, the tower at Reagan airport has been understaffed for years. The tower there was nearly a third below targeted staff levels, with 19 fully certified controllers as of September 2023, according to the most recent Air Traffic Controller Workforce Plan, an annual report to Congress that contains target and actual staffing levels. The targets set by the F.A.A. and the controllers’ union call for 30.
The shortage — caused by years of employee turnover and tight budgets, among other factors — has forced many controllers to work up to six days a week and 10 hours a day.
The F.A.A. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
