gate @gate.itch.io · 05/09/2026huh i played a ton of ps1 games and never ran into this. i feel like most games followed the pattern of creating or loading save games upfront so you'd sidestep this issue completely. i guess i always had a bunch of save cards so running into this wouldn't have been memorable anyway. 010
Reposted by gateNifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Playing Derelict Star. I love this! I've struggled with how to through mechanics explaining something like this to the player. but turns sometime just spelling it out is very effective 1372
gate @gate.itch.io · 31/08/2026yeah it's really hard for me to not work in big blocks because there's such a high barrier to entry in the form of context switching. it feels like it takes a good hour before i start actually being productive in most projects. i'd want to do an hour here or there but it's so much less effective. 040

gate @gate.itch.io · 26/08/2026listen i'm all for outsider art but if i had to come up with video games from first principles i doubt the results would be all that memorable. after a life's work i'd be lucky to create a bootleg pacman. well yeah idk pacman is pretty good maybe even that's too ambitious. 2150
gate @gate.itch.io · 25/08/2026this is one of the things that building your own engine helps with tremendously. i've never built a game loop and have it not be clear what's running and what's not, but this seems to happen all the time when i use someone else's engine hmm. 030
gate @gate.itch.io · 25/08/2026oh neat you've played my game? i love your videos! and yes nifflas's work was very influential to me in my youth, particularly the knytt series and within a deep forest. 140

gate @gate.itch.io · 19/08/2026if you're taking suggestions then it would help in terms of organization to be able to reorder lines easily. certainly much easier to do on a real fridge when i can manipulate more than one word at a time. 110

gate @gate.itch.io · 18/08/2026love this new github feature where links don't work unless i open them in a new tab because the javascript that's supposed to switch out the DOM shits the bed. remind me again why single page web applications are good? they're certainly more complicated; i can clearly see that. 3120

gate @gate.itch.io · 06/08/2026beyond that, the points they make are in my mind pretty self-evident results of big AI. it shifts labor from individuals to companies, they absolutely are doing it for money, and my boomer relatives already quote their AI search results as fact. what specifically do you think is so outlandish? 120
gate @gate.itch.io · 06/08/2026if you are interested in communicating with other people, you might try a less incendiary opening line. you're referencing an obvious bad faith actor and comparing them to some random person on social media you don't know. doubt this is particularly persuasive to any party present! 120
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026yeah def I was replying with something similar but you beat me. it's got so much money and power behind it, it still exists even if you have the perfect argument against it. 130
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026totally. the topic is politicized enough that it's hard to move the needle in any direction imo. when I interact with AI discussions it's mostly to reaffirm to myself that there are still people that are thinking critically about it. it's easy to get wrapped up in reactionary takes on either side. 120
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026most people are reacting to a feeling they are having. getting to the root truth of that feeling is nontrivial and there are a lot of cognitive traps on the way. i find trying to interact with the best version of the argument I can understand to be more rewarding. 020
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026yeah I've just been assuming that's what they mean bc as you've pointed out, it doesn't quite make sense at face value. with a lot of topics that are emotionally charged I find you have to read between the lines a bit. just bc they didn't state it perfectly doesn't mean there's not something there. 230
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026if you want to read the argument more charitably you have to extend it to how AI is sold as a service and priced, which is how the danger of relying on it is realized. if your screwdriver was a subscription service the argument starts to make sense. it's a critique of the product, not the tool 140
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026That said I also think those sites are terrible because you should just talk to the other person like a human being instead of smugly sending them a link. i had no problem telling people directly how to communicate with me and the "bad actors" would often give up & find someone easier to manipulate. 010
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026but there's a contingent of bad actors that intentionally use social pressure to pass off responsibly to you to solve their problem. when someone provides clear context first, I know who I'm dealing with, but if they don't it's ambiguous + it takes twice as much effort to get the relevant context. 110
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026I get where these sites are coming from bc I was very often the person at work having to field somewhere between 20 to 50 questions from random folks a day for stuff that was only tangentially related to my job. it's not that the people communicating with me are necessarily wrong... 110
gate @gate.itch.io · 05/08/2026@jseakle.bsky.social had some good thoughts on this which is basically how I think about focus too. it's necessary when it helps you survive but you try to minimize use because you don't want to ruin your pace. 020
