@jseakle.bsky.social had some good thoughts on this which is basically how I think about focus too. it's necessary when it helps you survive but you try to minimize use because you don't want to ruin your pace.
— I went on a fun arc wrt focus, first being like "why would i want this", then being like "i think the controls should be inverted so i have to press the button to leave focus mode", then learning how to switch, then learning how to integrate, then learning how to minimize

ooh yeah that's a good score! this is my current top ten. my best is 99 and i want so hard to crack 100 but i seem to be stuck in the 80s recently. looks like your score would be in my top ten already so that's very impressive.

the closer it gets to the conclusion, the less sense it makes to me. like he opens up this entire fucking can of worms at the end that he's done nothing to convince us of. there's not one inherent truth in general, let alone in games. what are we talking about here?
23:22 mismatch between what they're shown and what they know to be true. Aesthetic deception is not often purely negative, but it is always a trade-off because

22:30 there's one inherent truth behind every game, and it's something which players are always attempting to perceive.

Still have these effusive reviews trickling in for Derelict Star and they never fail to make me smile. It's extremely gratifying to make something for yourself that seems to also connect with other people this strongly. In a lot of ways this game is pretty weird so it's nice to feel accepted. ❤️
Oh my GOD this is everything I ever want in a platformer and so much more!! The movement is so deep & weighty. Every single jump feels momentous and rewarding. The level design is so rich that no single jump ever feels like filler. Every single corner of this world wants to teach you something, or just show you how cool you have become.

The gameplay is paced immaculately; shorter gimmicky segments are interweaved with longer segments so you never get too complacent or too exhausted. The level design drastically reinvents itself with each area, it's always such a delight to find somewhere new and be forced to devise a new intuition for navigation, and as a result, gain new movement intuition as well. This game proves that optional collectibles might be the best video game mechanic of all time. You are always offered an opportunity to challenge yourself or explore in a new direction, or you can just leave em for later when you've got a better grasp of your movement quirks. I have a bit of a one-track mind, so when playing a new game, I usually gun it straight for the any% ending or feel the need to go for Everything. However, in Derelict Star, I always had my eye on a cool new platforming challenge. It didn't matter if the main path skipped a few simple qbits for now or if I was spending 30 minutes on something completely optional right next to a main objective, every jump this game has to offer is just so elegant and enticing. Also side note I love how the level design actively explores your hitbox so intimately, now I know what it's like to be tall and skinny and it's kinda awesome

The pixel art is so lovingly rendered; each new environmental gimmick stands out as a gameplay element & blends effortlessly into the sprawling atmosphere. All the colors are so lush and punchy, and the environments evoke classic metroidvania nostalgia while introducing some pretty unnerving abstract environments. The setpieces in some scripted segments are so so hype, and the music kic…

if you care about strategy games or roguelikes or just innovative games in general please play (and review) @smestorp.bsky.social's 868-BACK. it's massive and complex and compelling and beautiful. and you don't need to take my word for it, just look at Bennett Foddy's ballooning playtime.
A review of 868-BACK by Bennett Foddy:

Michael Brough makes deceptively simple-looking games that have an enormous amount of depth - his last game Cinco Paus is the only game I am still playing on my phone, nine years after it came out. I’m just a couple of hours into this new one and it already seems much deeper, bigger and more ambitious than the last one. You’ll probably be a little stumped at first! Getting to know his games, going from ‘totally lost’ to ‘lost in thought’ is a huge part of what’s enjoyable about them.

/edit 2 days later: good lord I am totally addicted to this game, in the best way possible

lol one of the later terminals (that they definitely saw bc they beat the game) makes it pretty obvious it's about anxiety not depression but media literacy is clearly not their forte 😭

it's just culture war out-group signaling bullshit. even if you're straight and cis they'll call you "bluesky coded" whatever that means lol.
an excerpt from a Steam review for Derelict Star that reads:

"With all that said, the game is a step above the mediocrity that is all video games these days, therefore me getting all the power cells and over half of the collectables. Why then the negative review? Because of the writing. What do you mean I should only do optional stuff for "the love of the game"? You think I'm going through this for the story? The story about a lone, depressed astronaut with self-esteem issues? That stumbles upon an abandoned space station that has an AI with a gleeful voice, that sometimes breaks down and is very mean? Lemme guess, the struggle the player goes through playing the game is an allegory for the character fighting their depression. Such BlueSky-coded narrative is copy pasted across much of modern media and it must not be tolerated."

if you've been dealing with anxiety your whole life you'll probably already know some of the things in this book, but I've never seen it all laid out so, simply, precisely, and clearly. if you identify with the astronaut in my game in any way I really recommend it.

The intro level made me rage quit, unfortunately. “Haha here are a bunch of jumps that are hard in an uninteresting way like every other game, but we are going to give you controls that are clunkier than any other game, and we won’t polish them…” No time for that… If there is [...]

gate
@GateEightyEight

honestly this could be an example of the tutorial gating you correctly. i'm sorry it frustrated you but it's fundamentally a game about the movement system. i'm not hiding a different type of game play further in. all the mechanics and puzzles revolve around the movement.

Pretty regularly getting extremely flattering reviews for Derelict Star. I'm very glad it's connecting with folks!
To say this is one of the greatest platformers I've played would be a major understatement, and I have been into the weeds of precision platformers for somewhere in the ballpark of fifteen to twenty years. The controls are very unique in a way that doesn't feel novel "for the sake of being novel." It's one of those games that's hard to understand how it plays without being the ones with fingers pressing the buttons. Right out of the gate it feels very smooth and satisfying, but the more you play, the more the depth and nuance of your controls unfolds. It is nothing short of magical to discover a new trick, or some strange interaction you weren't expecting. This happens a *lot* of times throughout the course of the game. It is quite rewarding to learn, and it's even more rewarding to apply what you've learned. There were several points in my playthrough where I learned something new and immediately had an idea of somewhere else I'd previously been where the new knowledge may be relevant. It is a very large game just in terms of raw number of rooms, and the scope expands greatly and breathes new life into a large chunk of already-experienced rooms when a revelation presents itself.

The beautiful visuals informed by PICO-8 and very spacey/open sound design only enhances the feeling of being lost in this vast abstract world. Particularly, the jetpack, falling, and landing sound design makes you feel very heavy in a small but important way. The soundtrack is also filled with love, though sparse in some locations.

The introspective text provided in exchange for progression is also very thoughtful and personally hit painfully close to my heart.

I am not even close to 50% of the way done collecting All the things, and I've sunk a day into the game. Derelict Star is a masterpiece, and if you like precision platforms it's required reading. If you don't like precision platformers, this one is VERY different from others and it's still worth your time.

the basic idea is you make a function that returns how above/below the baseline the water level is for a given x position. that function is a combination of sine waves + any splashes you've made in the water
a code block with the following code:

func _get_delta_y_value(x: float, disable_splash := false) -> float:
	var out = 0.0
	if wave_height > 0:
		if standing_wave:
			out = (
					sin(2*PI*(x/period_in_pixels-signf(motion_direction)*time/frequency_seconds)) +
					sin(2*PI*(x/period_in_pixels+signf(motion_direction)*time/frequency_seconds))
				   )/2.0 * wave_height
		else:
			out = sin(2*PI*(x/period_in_pixels-signf(motion_direction)*time/frequency_seconds))*wave_height
	if not disable_splash:
		for splash in splashes:
			out += splash.get_contribution(x)
	if current_percentage != 1.0:
		out = depth_in_pixels - (depth_in_pixels - out)*current_percentage
	return out
