A chemical odour produced by naked mole-rat queens may suppress reproduction in other females, reports a study in @nature.com. The finding reveals a mechanism behind one of the most extreme social systems known in mammals: spklr.io/63325ErZKv #AnimalBehaviour #Neuroskyence

Our new paper is out in @nature.com! We uncovered how a naked mole-rat queen 👑 controls an entire colony: a natural contraceptive scent that suppresses reproduction in other females! A remarkable mammalian parallel to bees and ants! 🐝🐜 @garyrlewin.bsky.social youtu.be/enfv3zJrWKM?...

Using deep visual proteomics we could identify effectors that initiate mechanical hypersensitivity. This may enable new therapies targeting a proven pathway that can be targeted for effective non-addictive pain relief! Enjoy the Paper www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Humans have not yet benefited because of rare non-lethal side effects that stymied FDA approval of anti-NGF drugs. Here using amazing technology we could detect novel downstream effectors of NGF in just a handful of sensory neurons!

We have known for decades that NGF is a key factor in chronic mechanical hyperalgesia (see doi.org/10.1111/j.14... and doi.org/10.1111/j.14...). Blocking NGF is an incredibly effective analgesic strategy and has been used million-fold in dogs and cats (Librela and Solensia).

We were very happy to help, in a very small way, in getting this beautiful structure out. The structure is remarkably conserved considering the famous 28S ribosomal RNA split. I suspect that the split has as yet unknown biological repercussions in this remarkable animal..

Widely accepted findings should be validated. For example, mechanically-activated currents (MA-currents) in sensory neurons depend on PIEZO2..right?. Here we show that PIEZO2 is NOT associated with a huge loss of MA-currents in sensory neurons. #ion channels #sensory www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
