I feel like I've been subconsciously waiting for this podcast for a year, since reading the thread on this subject. And it's still full of surprises. Also it's relevant if you're trying to watch Vigil Season 3 while trying to forgive the horrors of S2.

you can climb over them. you can crawl in them. you can claw them and fight them. you can lie on them or roll around. They even make load noise if you fight them. she thinks boxes are the bestest, and cannot grasp why Napoleon, our other cat, doesn't seem to understand this.

Excellent episode. A useful reminder as well about how the Royal Navy used to be so big you routinely had small ships with frankly less than scary names doing their level best to mix it with much bigger ships with much fancier names!

Yup. Public notice. But I believe he was also specifically informed, via the Red Cross.

120

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Trigg's VC is very similar, for another extraordinary act of bravery, but slightly different. The evidence came from the captain of U-468, but not the initial nomination. That's what makes Roope's particularly fascinating. It was Heye who kicked off the process.

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

My teacher brother has just informed me that his primary school kids now refer to anything shit or old fashioned as "Brexit". Which has made my morning.

341943424

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

worth listening to the episode. It wasn't just based on Roope's conduct as a captain. It was because, after her sinking, he stayed in the water helping his crew climb onto Hipper's nets. He continued to do so until he was too weak to save himself and, despite the efforts of Hipper's crew, drowned.

0120

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

At which point, no doubt to the great relief of the Admiralty, and of the Kriegsmarine, Heye finally stopped banging on about it. Anyway. We cover the German plan for Norway, Glowworm, but also the complexity of the VC on the podcast ep. Because the nuance of that last bit often gets overlooked.

5361

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Anyway. EVENTUALLY everyone decided that it was probably just a really good idea to give Roope the Victoria Cross he deserved, accepting Heye's testimony in lieu of that of a British officer of equivalent rank. Which is why Roope has the EARLIEST VC won in WW2, but why it wasn't awarded until 1945.

1381

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Heye almost certainly knew this. When promoted to Rear Admiral (equiv) he resubmitted his nomination of Roope for a VC via the Red Cross. When he was promoted to Vice Admiral, he did it AGAIN. All this was a bit awks for the Admiralty and Kriegsmarine, who were, ya know, trying to fight a war.

1442

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Critically, Roope COULD NOT have been granted a Victoria Cross without Heye's nomination. The awarding criteria at the time were weighted towards nominations from a senior officer. No British senior officers survived, and the only surviving lieutenant was now a POW in Germany.

1322

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

As you can imagine, the Kriegsmarine, and the German government, were less than happy with Heye for doing so. But Heye felt HMS Glowworm's last stand ranked as one of the finest acts in naval history, and that Roope's conduct as captain, and in giving his own life to save his crew, demanded a VC.

2373

John Bull @garius.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

There are other instances where evidence provided by German officers contributed to a VC award, but Roope of Glowworm is unique. It was Heye, of the Hipper, who provided the Royal Navy with the first full account of Glowworm's loss via the Red Cross, including his nomination of Roope.
