Yuuuuup. Even if you're just on Cenno payments it can be a gamble. I always tell them my estimated income will be a few thousand less than it's actually likely to be, just to smooth any possible system hiccups. Saved me once or twice in the past, and I usually get a small lump sum at tax time.

Honestly I think that would make really interesting research question if broken down by types of pain. Like is there a difference between low-grade/long vs high/acute? How much does social setting or number/sex/familiarity of witnesses matter? Pain while doing vs sitting around getting zapped? etc--

The thing I loved most about weekly TV in the 80s/90s/2000s was its "circumstance of the week" nature, and this is exactly why. It was usually tight, satisfying, and still left room for character/story growth etc when treated well by the writers. Streaming TV just didn't scratch that itch the same.

I'm about halfway through Dust Bunny and you absolutely CANNOT convince me that the little girl at the heart of things isn't a witch. And Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver are delights, as always. The set design and costumes are gorgeous. It's an excellent romp so far.

Apparently yes? There's a paid search engine called Kagi that runs on Google's back-end, which from the accounts I've seen is basically Google before the enshittification began. Cory Doctorow has mentioned it a few times in his newsletter as being Very Worth The Money. (Alas, I'm broke.)

Tangential, yet related: the podcast "You're Wrong About" has an episode on sex offenders that goes into a lot of the history, statistics, problems, solutions etc with how sex offenders are treated/punished etc in the US. It's a good listen for a more nuanced overview than you usually get.

Yeah I'd love to know what kind of world Will lives in where 50 grand *isn't* a large windfall for most people. Isn't that more than the median annual wage in the US? It's ~2-3x the amount of most govt benefits you get here in Australia. So *extremely* significant for about 8% of us.

Depending on where you live, you could solve the cash management problem pretty well by buying a house. Median price in Sydney has been over $1m for a while. It's not much better in the other capitals down here either.

Been in the CBD for half an hour and had 3 trucks covered in LED screens with lobbying ads go past. Still trying to work out if it's one truck cycling ads or different trucks. And who thought using AI in a "water good, protect marine life/sanctuaries" ad was good idea.

They don't stick to the tray if they're wrapped in foil. Plus you can use the foil as a plate cover when you open it up and start adding toppings. But mostly I think it's because that's how you do it in a campfire so you don't get ash all over the potato, & people just transferred that to the oven.
