Current understanding of the #rasuwa disaster shows a very large rock avalanche released from the valley north of #Langtang-Lirung. Parts of a #glacier were involved in the failure, likely contributing large amounts of water, though other water sources undoubtedly contributed. lnkd.in/p/eR3XUPkr

The study presents an inventory of hanging glaciers in the Alaknanda basin (Garhwal Himalaya) and the authors performed runout simulations for select glaciers that could impact infrastructure. Their findings highlight the need for targeted monitoring and risk-informed planning.

Since 1968 there have been over 1,400 fatal landslides in Nepal, killing over 6,000 people. The data shows that the impacts are increasing with time. eos.org/thelandslide...

The Matai’an landslide dam in eastern Taiwan has failed this afternoon (eos.org/thelandslide...), flooding Guangfu, about 15 km downstream focustaiwan.tw/society/2025.... Even in the middle of a typhoon, the resulting flood produced a detectable seismic signal at stations ~40 km away.

There are a tremendous number of icebergs in Tracy Arm following the landslide-triggered tsunami. The reason for this is that ~300 meters of the north side of South Sawyer Glacier broke off and disintegrated into many many smaller icebergs as seen in @planet.com imagery 🧪⚒️

First cloud-free optical satellite imagery from @planet.com show the destruction of Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India. Unfortunately the source area in the mountains is still obscured by cloud and so the ultimate cause is still speculative. 🧪⚒️

An excellent new paper (Walden et al. 2025) examines the occurrence of accelerated movement in rock slope landslides in Alaska as adjacent glaciers melt. Some of the slopes, such as the one in the images below (at Barry Glacier), showed periods of pronounced acceleration. eos.org/thelandslide...

Every +0.1°C of global warming leads to ~2% more glacier ice loss. Sticking to the #ParisAgreement (+1.5°C) would preserve over half the ice compared to current policies (+2.7°C). This is the result of a new study based, led by Harry Zekollari, Lilian Schuster & several co-authors from our group.
