It all happened so quickly, but… it’s officially a wrap for this year’s CLaSH Annual Meeting in Boulder, CO! 🏔️ The meeting was jam-packed with plenty of hard-hitting discussions on the multiple facets of cascading hazards.

Over the past week, the CLaSH rapid response team has been investigating the Nepal flooding event and compiling our researchers’ findings into an ArcGIS StoryMap. Our goal is to rapidly share relevant information, resources, and emerging scientific insights with the broader community.

🛠️ Next - Mirna Kassem: recent PhD, current postdoc at UC Berkeley. Mirna’s research focuses on advancing the characterization, assessment, and mitigation of cascading natural hazards through data-informed computational frameworks that integrate modeling with sensing and monitoring technologies.

Today, we’re excited to highlight some early-career faces presenting their research at the CLaSH annual meeting. 🌧️ First - Ann Sinclair: PhD student, Northwestern. Ann is working with CLaSH to generate high-resolution weather simulations over Southeast Alaska during recent landsliding events.

⚙️ Also coming out of WA, we have Dr. Erkan Istanbulluoglu: Professor in the CEE Department at the University of Washington. Erkan studies the interactions among hydrologic, ecologic, and geomorphic processes in watersheds and how these interactions shape geohazards during climatic extremes.

🌊 Next CLaSH annual meeting speaker is Dr. Allison Pfeiffer: Associate Professor in the Geology Department at Western Washington University. Allison studies fluvial geomorphic processes, primarily in gravel-bedded rivers often through the lens of sediment supply and grain size.

Another day another debris flow fan! Today the UO gang, along with friends from UAF, explored the 19 mile debris fan in Haines, Alaska. The day included installing cameras, collecting rocks, and enjoying wild raspberries.

This week, Josh Roering’s research group touched down in Southeast Alaska! Today, the group started off their field work - including checking out new culverts, downloading seismometer data, and updating infrasound sensors. Stay tuned for more awesome science and beautiful Alaska photos!

Yesterday, we headed to the field to collect some data at a burn site from the 2020 Cameron Peak fire! Made field observations, set ground control points, took drone surveys, and (of course) ate lunch in the rain for a classic field work adventure. #remotesensing #rainorshine
