How can an individual be “polarized”? An individual can be “radicalized”. Anyway, most “polarization” literature is about right-wing radicalization. Stop using the term “polarization” for radicalization on one pole!

Such a missed opportunity for the EU and its (richer) member states. Both the UK and the US are weakening their university systems and there is a unique opportunity to use some of their top talent to lift up EUropean universities. Instead, they defund their core and add a few shiny stars.

Aside from the systemic racism in the media that the Arday affair exposed, it's disturbing to see academics now lean into this to defend a racist in the name of "science" and under the guise of "ensuring the quality of higher education" and "institutional accountability" [insert whatever else]. 1/

Years ago, John Mortimer playfully dismissed the prospect of global warming with reference to the probability of southern England developing a climate akin to Tuscany (with associated benefits such as vineyards etc). He didn’t pause to reflect on what might happen to *actual* Tuscany. Same here.

Yes. This point is not sufficiently recognized in the global imbalances debate. If you think your CA deficit is excessive and caused by factors outside your borders, you should tax or otherwise discourage capital inflows. Tariffs are a very blunt tool at best. +

It’s been brought to my attention that the Economist cover story is blaming Gen-Z socialism on “an influential group of socialist academics” led by @isabellamweber.bsky.social. Turns out Gen-Z got radicalized by … our analysis of corporate earnings calls. Huge if true!
Quote from the article: “An influential group of socialist academics provides the intellectual ballast for these views. The work of Isabella Weber of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, suggests that businesses' pricing power means that the modern economy serves executives and shareholders better than it does ordinary people. In a paper last year Ms Weber and her colleagues analysed companies' earnings calls, finding that many firms took advantage of inflation to
"protect or even increase profits".”

MIT closing three of its four libraries is shocking and appalling and underscores that the source of so much of the crisis in higher education comes not from attacks from the far right or the collapse of public trust, but rather from the university administrative class itself.

1/ Why is atmospheric CO₂ accelerating faster than fossil fuel emissions are growing? The answer is buried in the data, and it's more worrying than most people realise. A thread. 🧵👇
Line chart showing atmospheric CO₂ concentration at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1958 to 2024. A light blue sawtooth line shows raw monthly values, reflecting the seasonal cycle of plant growth. A dark blue smooth line shows the seasonally adjusted record, rising from 315 ppm in 1958 to over 426 ppm in 2024.

A dashed red curve shows the super-exponential fit, with the instantaneous growth rate rising from 0.27%/yr in 1960 to 0.64%/yr in 2024, more than doubling over the period of the record.
