A colossal gas giant exoplanet and its companion moon, locked in an eternal gravitational embrace. A vivid cosmos alive with color, whispering of enigmas waiting beyond the visible spectrum.
This captivating artwork portrays a cosmic tableau centered around two celestial entities set against an inky, star-studded expanse. Dominating the scene, a colossal gas giant exoplanet swirls with vibrant bands of azure, amber, and ivory, its dynamic atmosphere alive with turbulent storms and dense, churning cloud formations. Scattered stars pierce the darkness, their faint glimmers amplifying the scene’s boundless grandeur. Below, a textured moon nestled in the lower left corner glows with a pearlescent sheen, its cratered surface softly capturing the glow of distant starlight. Balancing dramatic energy with serene harmony, this illustration invites contemplation of the universe’s quiet splendors and the awe-inspiring mysteries waiting to be discovered.

IR image of the iconic Horsehead nebula by Hubble. 🔭 🧪
This is an infrared image of the Horsehead Nebula taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The image shows a dark, horse-head-shaped cloud of dust and gas, known as Barnard 33, rising from a turbulent background of glowing gas and bright stars. The "neck" of the horse faces to the lower left. The image is dominated by hues of red and brown from the dust, with areas of blueish light outlining the edges of the nebula where it is being illuminated by surrounding stars. Numerous stars are scattered throughout the image, appearing as bright white points of light. The overall scene has a dramatic and majestic feel.

A star cluster is shown inside a large nebula of many-coloured gas and dust. The material forms dark ridges and peaks of gas and dust surrounding the cluster, lit on the inner side, while layers of diffuse, translucent clouds blanket over them. Around and within the gas, a huge number of distant galaxies can be seen, some quite large, as well as a few stars nearer to us which are very large and bright. The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which, have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view. This image of the Ring Nebula, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements. Stars litter the scene, with a particularly prominent star with 8 long spikes in the top right corner. An infrared light echo traveling from the lower left through the upper right of the image. The image is speckled with dozens of white stars, some showing Webb’s signature 8-point diffraction spikes, against the black background of space. The image also shows tightly packed, glowing red filaments that resemble muscle fibers or wood grain.⁣

if you made art this year, you did well. a sketch, even if it was scrapped ; a poem, even if it was deleted — mattered. you put thought to paper, you engaged with the creative alchemy of turning feeling to something tangible. doesn't matter if you weren't productive "enough." or good "enough."

it’s gonna be hard to pick my favorite space images of 2024 when we got such amazing ones like these
Clouds of gas and dust with many stars. The clouds form a flat, blue background toward the bottom, and become thicker and smokier toward the top. Stars on one side light the nebula. A thick arc of gas and dust reaches around from the bottom-right corner of the image toward the top-left corner. It begins as a dark and obscuring cloud at bottom right and gradually becomes brightly lit by many stars at the upper left. Other large, foreground stars lie between the nebula and the viewer.

Image credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, J. Tan (Chalmers University & University of Virginia), R. FedrianiThree bright stars with diffraction spikes shine near the center-right of the image, illuminating nearby clouds that glow in pale blue. The clouds darken at the edges of the image, and are dotted with smaller stars, some also with diffraction spikes.

The upper left corner of the image is filled with mostly orange dust, and within that orange dust, there are several small red plumes of gas that extend from the top left to the bottom right, at the same angle. The center of the image is filled with mostly blue gas. At the center, there is one particularly bright star, that has an hourglass shadow above and below it. To the right of that is what looks a vertical eye-shaped crevice with a bright star at the center. The gas to the right of the crevice is a darker orange. Small points of light are sprinkled across the field, brightest sources in the field have extensive eight-pointed diffraction spikes that are characteristic of the Webb Telescope.

Supernovae are spectacular spectacles. These enormous explosions result in the dramatic death of a star. Supernovae are thought to be necessary for life in the Universe. Nearly all of the elements in the human body were made in these incredible outbursts. You are star stuff.

NGC 346 side-by-side images: Hubble and Webb. 🔭 🧪
A side-by-side comparison of a Hubble image of the massive star cluster NGC 346 (left) versus a Webb image of the same cluster (right). The Hubble image shows the cluster in shades of blue against a black background punctuated by white stars of various sizes. Ethereal nebulosity, looking much like draped chiffon, dominates the image. The Webb view, in shades of pink and orange against a black background, is speckled with fewer stars than in the Hubble version. These stars are white and pink. Webb pierces through the cluster’s clouds to reveal more of its structure, which looks like twisted fibers.

me if i was a planet
NASA's Voyager 2 took this 'false color' photograph of Saturn on July 21, 1981, when the spacecraft was 33.9 million kilometers (21 million miles) from the planet. Two bright, presumably convective cloud patterns are visible in the mid-northern hemisphere and several dark spoke-like features can be seen in the broad B-ring (left of planet). The moons Rhea and Dione appear as blue dots to the south and southeast of Saturn, respectively.

Image credit: NASA/JPLThe planet Uranus on a black background. The planet appears blue with a large, white patch taking up the right half. The patch is whitest at the center, then fades into blue at it expands from right to left. A thin outline of Uranus is also white. Around the planet is a system of nested rings. The outermost ring is the brightest while the innermost ring is the faintest. Unlike Saturn’s horizontal rings, the rings of Uranus are vertical and so they appear to surround the planet in an oval shape. There are 9 blueish white dots scattered around the rings.

Image credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScIA near-infrared image of Saturn and its moon Titan. Saturn appears dark purple with a light blue band at the equator, while its rings appear light pink. Just to the bottom of Saturn is Titan, which appears as a light purple dot.

The Great Red Spot is a deep navy blue, surrounded by bands and swirls of pink, and light blue.

the pillars of creation, from chandra and webb. simply stunning 🌌
This composite image features a region of star formation known as the Pillars of Creation. Here, tall columns of grey gas and dust emerge from the bottom edge of the image, stretching toward our upper right. Backed by dark orange and pink mist, the cloudy grey columns are surrounded by dozens of soft, glowing, dots in whites, reds, blues, yellows, and purples. These dots are young stars emitting X-ray and infrared light. Churning with turbulent gas and dust, the columns lean to our right with small offshoots pointing in the same direction. The misty glow, colorful stars, and lifelike grey dust formations combine to create an image of yearning cloud creatures at dusk, reaching for something just out of frame.
