This is a great example of how I think most lies (and especially in the realm of politics) work, the liar doesn't care because even if they know it's false they believe it might as well be true You say something you believe is in essence true in place of the literal truth because it sounds better

Disco Elysium style text box. It reads:

RHETORIC [Heroic: Failure] — Alright, here we go. We're devoting all your available brain cells to coming up with a question about populism. Scratch that, to coming up with the question about populism, the alpha and omega of populism questions, and that question is:

1. (Whisper.) "Is Count Binface the Establishment?"
2. Oh god, that's bad. Surely I can think of something better.

I'll always say that Napoleon, while he had actual practical concerns and was not just a mad warmonger, had the fatal flaw that he simply could not make a peace that left his enemies feeling they weren't being destroyed or set up. By the by, listen to the Age of Napoleon podcast!

The souls games aren't that difficult, but to make them easier requires going against the instincts of new players If an area is killing you too often you should go elsewhere, which is hard to accept if you've been slowly grinding some actual progress Balanced builds are punished, you have to pick

There's something to how ds2 and sotfs handle enemy placements that I find really interesting Feels like ds2 tells a better story with enemies while sotfs is a remix, with less coherent placements but with added challenge (I say enemies but I'm also thinking of poison jars and stuff like that)

It's really interesting to see in real time the relative receptions of the new Hoi4 and Warhammer 3 DLCs Both are new paid content models based on the idea of less content, more frequently at a lower price Yet both have had pretty different receptions

Yeah, this is the thing fiction tends to get wrong about expansionist empires a lot: if you’re able to successfully expand for decades/centuries you usually do have *something* that makes being in the club attractive to a non-trivial amount of people:

One of the neat things of reading clausewitz's "on war" is that it's written by and for people who have already mastered the basics He argues you can live off the land without supply lines or tents with the proper scavenging system and the strategic flexibility that gives is worth the attrition

it's also, as @diplomatofnight.com has pointed out, pretty rare for a foreign power's goals to be to completely eliminate any and all officials that might theoretically be able to govern. less regime change than an aim for total collapse and anarchy.

i cannot characterize the strikes as anything but revealing an exterminationist mindset. the goal is not an iran that can "exist as a reasonable partner within the international system". the goal is to make iran cease to exist and to condemn the region permanently to poverty, violence, and ruin.
