Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents. I did it because the government isn’t. This is what I found.

Immigration agents have the authority to detain whom they reasonably suspect are in the country illegally. We found more than 50 Americans who were held after agents questioned their citizenship. They were almost all Latino.

Agents also can arrest citizens who allegedly interfered with or assaulted officers. We compiled cases of about 130 Americans, including a dozen elected officials, accused of assaulting or impeding officers.

I wrote a story that pubbed today about the illegal, dangerous, and damaging activity happening in Yosemite while the park is left open but half-staffed due to the gov shutdown. I was surprised when the DOI asked me to issue a correction. They've also called for retractions from other publications.

A USDA spokesperson just told me that out of the 1,400 USFS staffers with firefighting qualifications who took voluntary resignations and retirements this year, they were able to get only 65 back into active duty.

KABAS: People are frustrated with legacy media because it often feels like they’re driving with the parking brake on. In these unprecedented times, readers/viewers want to feel like the people delivering their news are also experiencing it on a human level just like they are.
I share these frustrations, especially when the public is being asked not to believe our eyes. All the people who sounded the alarm about Project 2025 and the destruction of a second Trump administration were absolutely right. So where is that story?

breaks my heart. I rescued a common murre that was in bad shape on the beach in SF a few years back and got him to the experts at WildCare. They nursed him back to health and he ended up fostering a chick also in their care. They were rehabbed released but I think about my murre buddy all the time

A couple of follow-ups re: today's California #quakes: 1) There was actually only one significant quake as of 1pm PT--the M7.0 SW of Eureka. The far northern Sonoma County quake was actually ~M4.1 but initially registered higher due to conflicting data. [1/3]
