Avery, the High Paladin and Rueben’s rival, struggles with protecting the kingdom from the demon attacks and supporting the Church as the king tries to tear the kingdom away from it. With the help of the rest of the council, Avery puts pressure on the king to maintain the connection between the kingdom and the Church.

Their different approaches will bring them closer to the demons than either of them ever wanted—Rueben with one of the demons pulling the strings, and Avery with the man who’s summoning them. Together, they have to face down the demons or risk losing everything they’ve worked for.
