A Lesson in Thorns is a super fun, kinky, sexy story with folksy, mystic, dark academia vibes. Sierra Simone captivates me every time with her seamless blend of poetry and profanity, the sacred and the silly. Highly recommended if you're into ancient rituals and fucking your friends in the woods.

The direct sequel plot (Spiral) was, in fact, made into a movie to follow the original Japanese Ring film, but it bombed so they released an entirely different plot as the movie Ring 2 the next year. This one was more widely accepted. The US versions of Ring and Ring 2 are also hot, different takes.

I may never practice jiu-jitsu again, may never advance past a blue belt, but those years were not wasted. I may never need to defend myself "irl" with grappling moves, but the physicality I trained in helps my current body move with an ease I would not have known without it.

I'm back on my SMILE bullshit! Swap em! Skye should be the first movie. Rose could be a therapist managing the influx of traumatized Skye fans, and catches the curse. It ends w/ her not getting RID of the entity but she doesn't die! Rose learns to live with it a la The Babadook.

I read Audition because I liked the movie, and it's a great novel if not a little slow. Piercing's very similar matter-of-fact style makes for brutal descriptions. Abuse, pain, and mutilation seem like everyday truths, and I squirmed at the protagonist's desire to cut someone's Achilles tendon.

I've been chasing after a horror novel that can actually provoke a physical reaction from me, the way horror movies do, for ages. The only book that ever scared me shitless, I couldn't finish because it was too deeply personally terrifying (Pet Semetary). Then I found Piercing by Ryu Murakami.

People like to knock Smile 2 for the blatant product placement of VOSS, but it is actually genius. In universe, Skye WOULD have a partnership with VOSS to exclusive drink them. And it's written in that the repeated use of those bottles is showing you every moment Skye wants to abuse substances.

Smile is riddled with the problems of an early indie writer jumping at the opportunity to make a unique new film. It just unfortunately doesn't feel like the therapist character was researched enough, especially because she stands in stark contrast to how REAL Skye is in the sequel.
