The windows method feels unnecessary. Elixir does it with a single function that takes a chunk length and an optional chunk step (equal to the length if omitted). It could be just ``` iterator.chunk(2) // [0, 1] [2, 3] iterator.chunk(2, 1) // [0, 1] [1, 2] [2, 3] ```

if you've ever accused me of murder then you have to preorder. this is not a threat. there is no reason to be uncomfortable around me, regardless of your state of residence. do not believe what you've heard.

Unless they have hard evidence that companies are hiring significantly more consultants than in the past, it basically means "just apply to nonexistent jobs".

Interesting table comparing the times between introduction of WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL and support being added to web browsers, operating systems and graphics software: cloudinary.com/blog/2026-th...

2026, the Year of JPEG XL
JXL adoption has been a surprisingly dramatic saga. But it looks like in 2026 all pieces of the puzzle might finally come together.

Why use conventional safety measures that work most of the time when there could be a very rare scenario that makes the safety measures fail? Vaccines? Useless. Clean operating rooms? No need. Brakes on cars? Eh, sometimes they fail.

It's vastly more comforting to believe in an imminent robot apocalypse than the truth: the things that will destroy us are extensions of the unsexy but obvious problems all around us. We are not doomed in one grand way, but a thousand petty small ways.

Most operating systems and apps added support for WebP in 2022–2023, more than a decade after its introduction in Chrome (according to cloudinary.com/blog/2026-th...). A decade is more than enough for acquiring a reputation as an interoperability nightmare.

Any missing link in that chain breaks the user's workflow. And even Google, who created and pushed WebP (shipping it in Chrome in 2011 before even finalizing a spec) took more than 12 years to support it in Google Slides, for instance.

People who download images from web pages (including Google image search) need a format to be supported in at least three apps: the browser, their OS's file explorer, and the app where they're trying to use the file (Photoshop, Krita, Google Slides, etc.). Oftentimes there's a fourth or fifth app.

Florens Verschelde @fvsch.com · 17/09/2026
First assumption: definitely not, though my proposed solution would not work for people who don't know what the formats are at all. Second assumption: oh no, no no no, search "I hate webp" to get a taste of how lack of WebP support in most OSes and apps make people super angry.

Florens Verschelde @fvsch.com · 17/09/2026
Browsers should probably transcode WebP/AVIF/JXL images to JPEG on save, or offer the option. Probably not going to happen because of the technical roadblocks, but still.

Have you found a use for `@scope` in your work? Browser support seems pretty broad by now, if you keep to using `:scope` rather than the CSS Nesting's `&`.

I like: - Sidebars look okay again, none of that wasteful double border/padding look. - Window corners not being all over the place. Dislike: - Traffic light buttons look like ass, they’re distracting when they should get out of the way.

Other accessibility options that can help are “Increase contrast” and “Reduce transparency”, but they’re a bit more extreme.

Updated to macOS 27. The visual config I find bearable (in dark mode), in System Settings: Appearance > Liquid Glass: slider all the way to the right (less transparency, more contrast) Accessibility > Display: Show borders on, Differentiate without color on.
Screenshot of the System Settings Accessibility Display panel, with “Show borders” and “Differentiate without color” ticked, and other options off.

to be clear, said literature could very well show that anthropomorphic language has very little impact. but i'd like to see citations rather than vibes presented as arguments

if only there was a literature that ever looked at how anthropomorphic language for computer programs and machines may impact user attitudes. then we could maybe move on from david's argument of "nu-uh, it doesn't feel to me like it matters"

I think my disagreement with software developers who want to use LLMs to generate a lot of code is that I don’t think we need more software faster. I have no proof of that, but I suspect we now have digitized and built software for almost everything useful, and sometimes for harmful stuff as well.

And I’m not closed to the idea that our needs may change. If we get some scientific breakthroughs that make software applicable to more parts of the world in helpful ways, maybe then we will need to write more software faster. But right now we’re probably putting the code before the need.

Software developers think they’re explorers colonizing space, when the actual need, by now, is for them to be plumbers maintaining an essential down-to-earth infrastructure of an almost fixed size.

There could be an argument that one could AI-harness their way into producing better software, but let’s be real, that’s not what your OKRs say.

The correct frontier is quality, not quantity or time-to-market. But that‘s a low-growth or even economically stagnant prospect, so your employers and investors don’t want that, and you can’t sell them on it and get a promotion or even a job.

Software has eaten the world. Communication, entertainment, education, productivity, research, etc. The market is totally addressed. We actually need to slow down and write less code, fix old code, make things more accessible and performant, more secure, more usable, etc.

The parts about people needing programming to be complex and not feminine-coded remind me a lot of the transition that Web development went through, from a focus on Web Design and CSS to a focus on Frontend Development with complex build tools and JS frameworks.

To humans, but don't assume that birds in general or all bird species have the same vision as us. Their vision is usually sharper than ours, but there could be other characteristics that explain why they don't notice blades moving at specific speeds or angles.
