John Woo presents Miley Stewart and Hannah Montana in Face/Off
The cover of a Hannah Montana novel titled “Face-off” with the subheading “From the hit TV series on Disney Channel”. The cover features Miley Cyrus as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana and Emily Osment as Lilly Truscott. So, yes, I know that’s Lilly but that’s not as good a joke.

I would like to affirm that both you are absolutely good enough, and that you don’t owe us anything and doing private things that make you happy is totally awesome.

Someone started with “Dracula”, got worried about copyright, and forgot that they could just say “vampire”.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

I've been watching all the Godzilla movies in order and Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000) is a refreshingly solid A- effort of taking Godzilla seriously and having people and kaiju make internally consistent choices.

This only took a couple of minutes, well worth doing. Only a couple of False Dilemma frames, and do watch for the color question to prove you’re not a bot.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

In book-books, I re-read the Dark is Rising series every couple of years and I think it holds up for that age group. Maureen Johnson’s YA is great. All Scott Westerfeld is great and the Uglies series has lots of sporty aspects.

GN recs: For Christmas I gave some 12 year olds the Collected Bone (which is a brick) by Jeff Smith and they both loved it. I’m reading the ongoing Space Boy with one of them and we both love it. Amulet (finished) and Lightfall (on going) are great.

I just don't want visitors to be distracted by how awesome all my books are. (At least the old collect-by-color trend was a sort of an organizational system and a design motif. Design-wise, who wants a big wall of beige pages?)

My great-grandfather was over 100 when I spoke to him in my youth (1970s) so he had 20+ years in the late 19th Century. Unfortunately all I remember is that he was a nice old man who was moderately with it.

Not a deep counter-argument, but we saw The Merry Wives of Windsor at Chicago Shakes last night, which was Shakespeare spinning off a popular character into his own franchise. In 1597. So, there’s nothing new in the world? (Then again, it’s considered one of the weaker Comedies, so maybe it’s apt?)
