if you aren't already supporting @mothership.blog, you should be. support women and queer people in video game criticism and journalism. we deserve to exist in these spaces but, at least in the case of mothership, we can only exist and pay our writers and introduce you to new writers if YOU help us.

last repost: I'm going to continue to be annoying that while we can't solve everything with monthly subscriptions, if you're concerned about a basically single-digit number of women working in video game journalism, then subscribe to one of few sites left that hires women journalists

jess is right! it’s worse than ever for women in this field, and it was still pretty bad at our peak. im one of the lucky freelancers who has regular work (probably work more than i did at polygon!), and it’s still not a livable amount of pay. it’s pushing important and skilled women out.

when someone emoji-reacts to a message it should also tell if they typed and deleted a message first. Especially the thumbs up emoji

feeling vindicated by middling-to-bad reviews for DIGGER. Unpleasant vibes from that trailer. Not even a fun movie to joke about. Now TRUMBO...there was a fun movie name to say

Honored to join for what might be the most canonical work of video games criticism to date

thinking about where roguelike deckbuilders would sit on the tier list of "video game trends that quickly wore out their welcome." Yes they are annoying but are they cover-based shooter annoying?

having never seen The Sopranos or Evangelion there are some days when bluesky is pretty inscrutable to me. I long for the alternate universe where all the memes are about Nash Bridges and Tenchi Muyo

If breakfast was a tv show I think omelets would be a season 2 thing, like "yeah they've finally hit their stride"

Sad to report Primetime is "just ok." MOTY title is still up for grabs. Can the Nathan Fielder documentary clinch it...?

In honor of "AI posting day" I think always worth remembering that these executives are lying to you. LLMs will destroy the planet, it doesn't matter whether children can read, etc -- you do not defeat compulsive liars by debunking every lie because they will have fresh ones tomorrow

I am a very amateur programmer but relate to this description. Figuring out how to program something is part of the process. There are also details you put into code that occur in the coding and I think those kind of serendipitous details are what make creative works enjoyable

I have seen a lot of people confidently state that AI-generated menus are losing restaurants business and that does not seem to be the case. In any case, that's a losing fight because 1) it's probably wrong and 2) the ugliness is not the point (see Ravenous article in thread which is worth a read)

people on social media getting worked up over quirky human interest stories is why we used to only experience them at the end of the 10 oclock news. You either went to bed right after or Letterman started and you forgot about it

Every now and then I meet an adult who doesn't keep a calendar and wonder how they go through life like that. Like actually *nothing*? All your plans and obligations just float in your head?

more and more reasons why it is important to subscribe to outlets you like and trust and follow them directly. Reading with intention will make you better informed and produce a more sustainable ecosystem. Bookmarks and RSS are way way better than search results and news aggregators

This is something I find more and more true in my life. It's important for any project to progress and clarifies roles/responsibilities. Esp for volunteer projects, it helps for people to specify if they only want to help vs "actually I don't want to participate in this unless I can lead"

reading about Brian De Palma's 1990 Bonfire of the Vanities adaptation which was so bad someone wrote a book about it. More bad movies should have whole books written about them

I think this is a good post about what is cool and interesting about VR but also a lot of the ambivalence around it especially in the past few years. I like VR a lot and am getting a Steam Frame but it's hard to shake the feeling it's a doomed enterprise

it's funny seeing people revisit older GTAs and being like "actually these kind of suck and the missions are boring and the world is full of crass, unfunny, sub-Mad magazine-level comedy." A game series with a reputation basically unrelated to what's in the games

Funny how ingrained the console war shit is in video games. This is not a real story: MS did not "save" a Kojima game from evil Sony, we're talking about a game that *might* come out years from now on hypothetical future hardware, from a studio that has no shortage of resources and industry access

Bluesky mods having AI psychosis really typifies "guy who thinks being good at a math thing makes him a genius in all things" except in the case of vibecoding you aren't even good at that one thing. If only English had words to describe the novel phenomenon of "guy who is dumb but thinks he's smart"

Fat Kids Playing the Tuba
A historical deep-dive into the question: why DO so many fat kids play the tuba?

Jiminy Glick: Why do you think so many fat kids take up the tuba?

because I follow various writers and reviewers I sometimes see debates about what "criticism" is or should be and I am occasionally tempted to weigh in, and I have to remind myself that meta-debates about the nature of criticism is the path of madness
