Amusingly, this type of liability was also covered in the Talmud in roughly 200AD. As the rabbis would have it, an AI is either a roof or an ox, and either way the owner is responsible. The situation is quite thoroughly precedented.

... or ones where they are, like Helen Frankenthaler painting on unprepared canvas so it deliberately bleeds. Theoretically, one could even make a sculpture consisting entirely of stretched canvas over boards. As they say, "the possibilities are endless" ;-)

IMHO, the question is always "is it part of the artwork"? Because: you can make a painted plate where the plate isn't part of the artwork, and use a bought blank, or you can make a painted plate where it IS part of the artwork, and hand-make it. Same with canvasses; most aren't significant ...

Vaguely amusing side note: one of the many ways I earned money to put myself through art school (in ceramics) was stretching canvases for the painting students. Most of them didn't know how, and I did. And you're right, nobody asked ;-)

Microsoft has argued that the statements describing mass AI training on people’s work as potentially the “largest theft of labor in human history” and an “astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions” were one employee’s personal views, not the company’s legal position.

OpenAI models independently uploaded user photos that had been shared with ChatGPT to the public internet. This seems a lot worse than hacking. Images you’ve shared with ChatGPT being randomly remembered by an AI agent from its training data then posted to the internet is wild.

Aside from the ones that physics imposes and you can't bribe your way out of. That does sound like the kind of idea an engineer who doesn't understand law would come up with, though, so plausible.

"... from a productivity standpoint, junior developers have negative productivity. The only reason we hire them is that eventually they become senior developers. But an LLM will never become a senior dev." Least satisfying "I told you so" that doesn't involve the White House.

5/ RSV protection for babies is running into its own set of problems. RSV is the leading cause of hospitalizations for kiddos, so it's a pretty big deal. Fortunately, we have monoclonal antibodies, which are shots that protect babies under 8 months against severe RSV during their first season.

if you need to "check everything" that an LLM spits out in peer review, aren't you just making MORE work for yourself? What is even happening, and why is adding more steps and labor somehow considered the "better" way to do peer review???
