Open weights let anyone with enough gpus use it. We've seen the price of even consumer compute resources skyrocket since the big players have started stockpiling data centers.

Again, Neither NAFTA nor China are the reason that union auto jobs are leaving the area. Kyle Bos, the supposed union rep, voted for Trump 3 times. Three!🤷🏿‍♂️ Yes I'm sad that 1,400 truck manufacturing jobs were eliminated. But in California, BYD, a supposed "Chinese company" created 750 union jobs.

If these dorks seriously believe there's a significant near-term risk of developing an AI that results in human extinction, the solution is simple and obvious: hang everyone who's trying to build AIs, for crimes against humanity and attempted genocide. The "panic" is bullshit from start to finish.

It’s people - not AI systems - who are choosing to murder civilians with small drones at ever escalating rates around the world, as I recently wrote about with Yale’s Nathaniel Raymond for @foreignpolicy.com:

Innocent civilians are being murdered with dirt-cheap and essentially impossible to ban tiny flying robots at shocking numbers globally (read our piece below). We have REAL, CURRENT cyberpunk horrors to deal with right now, and we don’t need to waste our time on hypothetical AI basilisks.

Yo. This is the union calling for a boycott. Here in America people like to say "Well I was already boycotting Starbucks!" No you were not. You were just choosing not to buy their stuff. That is not a boycott. A boycott is an organized, collective activity. "I" don't boycott: we do.

You're right that AI has gotten better, but it's not inevitable. There are many times where technology showed promise, but was turned away because it's was unpopular or dangerous. Look at nuclear power: being disassembled now across the world.

for what its worth, companies are using AI as an excuse to do layoffs even if AI isn't replacing them. Many artists in LA were laid off while companies made promises about using AI to improve their art pipelines. That didn't materialize, but the layoff did.

jonathan rodney slamdunk @furysama.straylight.engineering · 09/09/2026
at the scale of a vaccine? does it outweigh the anxiety and dread people are feeling with mounting layoffs? is it actually better for people, or is it better for some metric or kpi or whatever performance management strategy is in vogue at google today?

and - to be clear! Responses to MAHA that condescended to real concerns about the health industry definitely do more harm than good! There's lots of data that people respond poorly to being condescended to.

jonathan rodney slamdunk @furysama.straylight.engineering · 09/09/2026
a millenium problem doesn't get you food on the table, and making coding easier doesn't impact people outside tech! These are doubtless impressive achievements, but they don't change the perceived impact of AI to ... everyone who doesn't work a cushy tech job to start with!

jonathan rodney slamdunk @furysama.straylight.engineering · 09/09/2026
because big pharma actually produced vaccines, which actually do good things. There is a concrete, material outcome that has improved people's lives. AI is associated with real, negative outcomes that people feel. AI has yet to produce a vaccine, or similar positive outcome that impacts people

I'm just summarizing why these arguments aren't actually working for you. People don't believe experts from tech - and there are reasons for that. That isn't your fault, but it is the prevailing sentiment. You can't argue out of that sentiment by being dismissive.

*nuclear power is only dangerous if it isn't done right; which sounds a lot like what people are saying about AI, and even about datacenters. if you want people to rally behind AI, deliver some proof that the people doing it will somehow have a better track record than nuclear engineers
010
jonathan rodney slamdunk @furysama.straylight.engineering · 09/09/2026
the best case scenario here is that AI is like nuclear power. despite showing massive promise for reducing the threat of global warming, the world has mostly disassembled nuclear power infra. not because it didn't work, or because it was particularly dangerous*: because it was unpopular
110
jonathan rodney slamdunk @furysama.straylight.engineering · 09/09/2026
If the promise of AI pays off, the power usage alone will require massive infrastructure changes, most of which will be paid for by people who will see little to no dividends from AI itself. Why should someone who doesn't have financial incentives invest in that future? why should they allow it?
110
jonathan rodney slamdunk @furysama.straylight.engineering · 09/09/2026
and the corollary to this is: what are you going to do if they DO believe? Because the right response on the part of the public here is absolutely NOT fund AI - if its genuinely a threat, nobody in tech has proven themselves to be a steward worth trusting with the future of the entire planet
120
jonathan rodney slamdunk @furysama.straylight.engineering · 09/09/2026
people have spent the last 20 years watching tech companies distort "don't be evil" into making palantir. What reason does anyone have to believe any of the experts? when people tell you this, the response is always a sort of strained "you're so silly for not believing this time"

I see a lot of people actively losing their minds about the AI stuff and I'm honestly starting to feel bad for them. But it's blinding them to the real problems. These things are not your girlfriend, but they're probably going to smash-and-grab passwords and attack bank or government data.
The observation that the most alarmist claims about A.I.’s impact seem to come from the individuals most connected to Rationalism should anger us. This exaggerated grimness makes it easy to overlook the more immediate harms created by these technologies, such as their potential use in cybersecurity attacks, excess resource consumption, impact on our cognitive fitness, role in undermining education and amplification of soul-deadening slop.

This style of anxious talk also allows the A.I. companies to portray themselves as the reluctant “stewards” of an inevitable technology, which is a framing they can use to deflect blame for damage caused by their own products.

The sword situation
The sword dangling over my head had lowered a touch over night. Still not close enough that I was freaking out but I could sense its movement. I called my brother to check if there were any developments with respect to his sword and he said he could sort of make it out way up there if he squinted. I don’t know why everyone’s losing it over these swords he said. Then I called my congresswoman to ask yet again if there were any plans to tackle the sword situation as it were and the girl who answered said it was the official position of the office that the swords do not exist except in some rare foreign cases. I could tell she was reading from a script. Can you let her know that they most certainly do I said and she said that she would pass the message along and hung up. Outside some landscapers were at work trimming the neighbor’s hedges. Each of them with a gleaming blade perched inches from the back of their necks. Why didn’t they just grab it at this stage I thought. Why didn’t they just reach right up and grab it.
