More info on #NoKings San Diego transit stats since I couldn't load this 300 page PDF on my phone yesterday. The last two protests before yesterday had about 30,000 extra trips over an entire normal Saturday, all within a couple hours.

A rare 4-car train operating on the San Diego MTS Green Line to handle post- #NoKings crowds. Four-car consists are typically reserved for major sports events. According to MTS Board meeting presentations, they carried an extra 30,000 passengers (15,000 round trips) during the last No Kings protest.

Red-legged Honeycreepers. Honduras. They are a type of tanager. They feed on flowers and fruits, and like hummingbirds, they have a long tongue for probing into flowers. The vivid blue color is not from pigments but is a structural color, where nanostructures in the feathers scatter blue light.

The 3/10/1933 Long Beach quake killed 120 people and brought home the dangers from unreinforced masonry buildings. It led to the first seismic provisions in the building code and the passage of the Field Act that ensured strong seismic safety measures for public schools.

Ubehebe crater. A phreatomagmatic eruption, where magmas impinge upon wet sediment or groundwater causing rapid vaporization. Volume expansion during vaporization causes the water saturated overburden (roof) to explode. Sudden depressurization causes magma to then erupt catastrophically.

Last year, my kid discovered one of very few Pinguiculas ever in the country of Belize. Their closest relatives seem to be from the cloud forests of southeastern Mexico, but they look different. The Maya Mountains. We are just now putting all our observations together!
