i hadn't considered that drones might actually be energy-efficient. some googling suggests that drones consume about 100 watts per kilogram. these drones with potato are about 6 kg and have a max flight time of about 15 minutes i think? it's something like 0.15 kwh, which is basically nothing.

Now, is drone delivery wasteful? If you’re only buying a single lightweight item — like a stick of deodorant, a bottle of sunscreen, or a potato — it seems more environmentally friendly than driving to the store. And as long as it’s subsidized, it’s way cheaper than DoorDash or whatever people use. I could see situations where it would be genuinely useful, especially if you can’t leave the house but you desperately need a bottle of ibuprofen and a Gatorade (for example). And of course it would be preposterous to DoorDash someone a single raw potato.

i was sitting in a liberal coffee shop and saw a copy of dune that somebody left on a table. i picked it up and asked somebody sitting nearby if he'd seen the owner. he had an australian accent and replied that they were in-between jobs. the book was owned by his friend paul, a tradie.
