every time I read Swidler, I feel two things at once: how powerful her metaphors and analogies can be, and how bad it is that sociologists tend to reject analytical units (here, the unit-act) that let us isolate and study objects formally in favor of such metaphors and analogies.
People do not, indeed cannot, build up a sequence of actions piece by piece, striving with each act to maximize a given outcome. First, people would be crippled if they had to think about each action they performed. Like dancing, but much more complex, orchestrating one’s day-to-day life must be learned so that it “comes naturally.” People develop habitual ways of acting, so they do not trip over their feet while deciding what steps to take (Camic 1986; Joas 1996). Culture provides the capacities that make such complex orchestration possible. Second, people organize action over time. Individual actions do not make sense by themselves, but only as parts of larger patterns. And culture has its effects not by providing the ends actors pursue but by shaping the patterns into which action is routinely organized.

New preprint! A review article on Generative AI and Society, with the fantastic @thomasdavidson.bsky.social & Danny Karell (smartly not online!) osf.io/preprints/so... The lit on genAI is sprawling and mostly not in sociology. Our goal is to synthesize core themes relevant to sociologists. +
GENERATIVE AI AND SOCIETY
Laura K. Nelson,
Daniel Karell,
and Thomas Davidson

ABSTRACT
For sociologists, generative AI inherits the legacy of earlier computational technologies: it is an advancement of machine learning already adopted as a methodology, and it intervenes in a society already shaped by algorithmic systems. Yet it also has a dimension that distinguishes it from previous computational methods, and one that makes it inherently sociological: its interactivity. In this review, we conceptualize the interactivity of generative AI and introduce a framework for understanding how it operates across individual, organizational, and institutional life. Specifically, the framework specifies how generative AI expands users, functions as a proxy for society, and expresses power,
both in sociological practice and in society. We conclude by suggesting three dynamics driven by generative AI that sociology will face in the near future: the transformation of scientific practice, the reorganization of social interaction, and the acceleration of algorithmic governance.

Keywords: generative AI, interaction, computational sociology, methods, algorithms, algorithmic governance

So many people are jealous of sociologists. And I get it. You realized too late that you should have spent your 20s becoming one instead of sitting on a barstool or studying biology or whatever other boring subject. Too bad. Only the select few can say “I am a sociologist.”

I have managed to abstract the template for replies to critiques.
A reply to critique

In this reply to the recent critique of our article, we: mischaracterize the critique; mischaracterize our own original claims; respond only to the peripheral arguments while remaining silent about the critique’s most devastating points; claim that the issues raised do not affect our core conclusions, regardless of whether this is the case or not; radically change the implied generality of our original claims; commit ad hominem while accusing others of it; and leverage the fact that we are likely to have the last word to generally muddy the waters.
