🤖📋 Can AI become a survey methodologist? At our #GESISsummerschool, @lydiarepke.bsky.social explored how AI can support questionnaire evaluation and help design better questions – without replacing survey methodologists. 👉 Read more about The Algorithm Behind SQP 3.0: sqp.gesis.org 👇

How much can we know about a survey question’s quality before collecting the data? Quite a lot. The SQP algorithm uses question characteristics & thousands of MTMM experiments to predict measurement quality. But theory, pretesting & validation remain essential to establish what a question measures.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁? 🤖📋 At the GESIS Summer School, I discussed AI-assisted questionnaire evaluation: predicting item quality and using LLMs to detect design issues. My takeaway: AI won’t replace survey methodologists—it can help us design better questions and collect better data.

🤖Can #AI predict the quality of survey questions? Our new study shows that a fine-tuned multilingual transformer can match the performance of SQP's traditional prediction approach directly from question text. Yang, Schonlau, Repke, Felderer, & Sucholutsky (2026) doi.org/10.1093/jrss... @gesis.org
The Survey Quality Predictor (SQP) is a web-based tool that predicts the measurement quality of survey questions (https://sqp.gesis.org). Traditionally, SQP relies on up to 72 manually coded formal and linguistic characteristics of survey questions. These features are then used by a random forest model to predict measurement quality. While this approach has proven successful, it requires users to invest considerable time and effort in coding these characteristics before receiving a quality prediction. e fine-tuned xlm-RoBERTa, a multilingual transformer model trained on more than 100 languages, to predict measurement quality directly from survey questions and their answer options. The results show that the model achieves prediction performance comparable to the random forest model currently implemented in SQP.
