The novel I'm working on is set in pioneer Florida c. 1906–1912, so the heat is almost a character. I think that to avoid it being background, it has to be described through viscerally through hot it affects human characters. I also try to give it a subtle intimation of agency. #HorrorWritersChat

Probably the crossroads demon because this archetype shows up a lot in the blues and in the folklore of West Africa and the American South. The Cenobites are a modern example. I also like trickster figures who cause havoc to no discernible objective. #HorrorWritersChat

I'll go with Mary Butts (1890-1937). Her work isn't well known because it's quite avant-garde, but she gave us "Speed the Plow" (1923), one of the most truly shocking stories ever written. She also wrote excellent pamphlets critiquing rationalism. #HorrorWritersChat

I think that all of the horror stories I love are strange. Strangeness is what makes horror interesting to me. I'll name "The Same Dog" by Robert Aickman. Aickman's genius was evocation over description; the story is emotionally devastating, but it isn't immediately obvious why. #HorrorWritersChat

A dude I knew once told me how one weekend he had a yard sale and people coming by kept telling him they were so sorry for his loss. Confused, he asked what they meant, and found out he spelled "Mourning Yard Sale" instead of Morning. It inspired a tale in my collection. :) #HorrorWritersChat
