A romantic interest for the protagonist, of all things. Most unexpected! I'm not sure how it will change the story's direction just yet. I'll probably bump the fellow off, though. #HorrorWritersChat

The eclipse ended, but the daylight did not return. Neighbors lit their porch lamps. By evening someone had watered the shadows. By morning, they'd grown. By the third night we were leaving small offerings on porches, and the moon, we agreed, seemed to be considering them. #HorrorWritersChat

Themes, I'd say. Some are very obvious, right on the surface. Others will be obscured til the ending. Some, you might never notice. You might even excavate a few that I've unconsciously hidden from myself. I want this to be a work of many, many layers. We'll see if I pull it off. #HorrorWritersChat

Tragedy. It begins in a storm and ends in a storm. The main character is part of the storm system, as violent as any other part. The storm doesn't clear because it cannot. Everything had already been broken long ago. #HorrorWritersChat

By the 40th day, something started knocking beneath the house. We counted the children & chickens. We counted the husbands & hounds. And then Nan remembered the dolly she'd left in the barn, the one with porcelain hands and the clothes we had crafted from Gran's old scraps... #HorrorWritersChat

Hopefully that makes it more uncanny? Haha! Or maybe it's a happy ending—fellow might have been a bore.

It began raining on St. Swithin's Day. By the fortieth Day, something had started knocking beneath the house. My husband said it was pipes. He went down to check. He came back up humming, and never spoke of the cellar, or to me, again. #Horrorwriterschat

I'm in the South. I think I moved to close to the coast. Perhaps they dislike salinity. I know they like decaying wood. I used to see so many as a kid in North Central Florida and Southern Georgia.

The novel I'm working on is set in pioneer Florida c. 1906–1912, so the heat is almost a character. I think that to avoid it being background, it has to be described through viscerally through hot it affects human characters. I also try to give it a subtle intimation of agency. #HorrorWritersChat

Hello! I'm Travis and I write strange, often horrible, stories. I am extremely uncomfortable in low humidity. Living in Florida, the combination of hot and dry is uncommon, but less and less so as the climate becomes more erratic. #HorrorWritersChat

Thanks Gree! I'm promoting a new volume of Manly Wade Wellman's early work that I edited: 3 novels and a short story: travisdjohnson.net/books/fearfu... Wellman was one of the more unique Weird Tales writers. He wrote Appalachian "folk horror" long before the term was coined #HorrorWritersChat

Probably the crossroads demon because this archetype shows up a lot in the blues and in the folklore of West Africa and the American South. The Cenobites are a modern example. I also like trickster figures who cause havoc to no discernible objective. #HorrorWritersChat

Oh, all sorts of things. In one tale, it's a bizarre situation involving a stapler. That's the one I'm most proud of; I wrote a story in which the objects of horror are mundane office supplies. #HorrorWritersChat

Hello, I'm Travis and I write strange stories and I'm a bit late today! This is an interesting question. It's rather difficult for me to have a favorite lie! I don't care for lies, and I would indeed argue that horror is the most honest of genres. Sorry if this answer is evasive. #HorrorWritersChat

I'll go with Mary Butts (1890-1937). Her work isn't well known because it's quite avant-garde, but she gave us "Speed the Plow" (1923), one of the most truly shocking stories ever written. She also wrote excellent pamphlets critiquing rationalism. #HorrorWritersChat

Creature from the Black Lagoon I think is fundamentally about destructive hubris and how humanity brands violation as "discovery" and the unknown as monstrous. I return to this theme again and again. #HorrorWritersChat
