“Secretary Rubio’s desire to stay on his boss’s good side leads him to twist reality like a pretzel.” Francis Fukuyama on Marco Rubio’s speech at the Acropolis from October 7. I’d be so disappointed in myself if one of the world’s preeminent political scientists (rightfully) flogged me like this.

I googled “What’s going on with the Gaza Peace Plan.” It’s not working because it’s not a peace plan at all, it’s a ghoulish real-estate development deal masquerading as foreign policy. The Trump clan doesn’t care about human rights or advancing the U.S. interests, only lining their own pockets.

From the book Empire of Pain, detailing the story of the Sacklers, the family behind OxyContin. I’ve felt this about today’s rapacious billionaires destroying the world for profit (especially Sam Altman) but couldn’t put it in words. Also applies to journalists trading their integrity for access.
“They [the Sacklers] could produce a rehearsed simulacrum of human empathy, but seemed incapable of comprehending their own role in the story, and impervious to any genuine moral epiphany.”

Michael Herr on the Vietnam War press coverage in his book Dispatches. The Iraq/US War reporters are now getting the social realist, prestige cinema treatment, which is giving me emotional whiplash, considering the origins of social realism (Sica’s Bicycle Thieves, Rossellini’s War Trilogy).
“The press got all the facts (more or less), it got too many of them. But it never found a way to report meaningfully about death, which of course was really what it was all about. The most repulsive, transparent gropes for sanctity in the midst of the killing received serious treatment in the papers and on the air.”

Wouldn’t it be ethically murky if the new studio went ahead with Barbie II? Isn’t it already, considering Warner Bros’s existing business relationship with Mattel? I know it’s a total waste of time to type this out since nobody cares but this is exactly why so many people are opposed to the merger.

What a ride of an article! It reads like a modern Shakespeare play: Trump Sr. didn’t go to his son’s wedding. Article also mentions Gazprom, Russian state-owned gas company & arm of Putin that funded the Yura Borisov AK-47 movie filmed in Russian-occupied Crimea in 2020. Funny how it all connects.

“In much of the world, the big battle for women is not the one for equal pay, but the one to be allowed to work outside the home at all. In swathes of the Middle East, north Africa and South Asia, “male honour depends to a large degree on female seclusion,” notes Alice Evans of Stanford University.”

I’ve been reading up about Ron DeSantis. The parallels between his spat with Disney & the ParaBros megadeal debacle in California are interesting. While ideologically the two cases could not be further apart, the state AGs could definitely afford to manhandle Paramount more, be tougher with them.

‘Penelope and the Suitors’, by Italian Renaissance artist Pintoricchio, who condensed The Odyssey into one frame. It’s contemporary and above all, true to the spirit of the source material, which is more important than accuracy. That’s how you do an adaptation (easier said than done 😆)
