I saw a MAGA guy on my train yesterday with a “murrica tough guy” looking shirt that said “It’s only treason if we don’t win.” I can’t stress enough how important voting is. Even after that we will probably need to hit the streets to demand the election results be honored.

Mhmmm. I left the Navy and missed out on amazing retirement benefits out of disgust for things I saw and heard during the 2000s. I’m not “proud” of that decision though. I waited several years to get out the right way and not go to the brig. It was a low effort compromise for personal comfort.

Tenure track positions at USNA were a great deal, but you kinda had to give up dreams of being on the cutting edge of scientific discovery, in part bc it’s undergraduate only but also for other reasons. But the overall quality of life is why people stayed. He’s about to pull that rug bigly.

What does matter is that I learned most of these professors loved being there, not for the academic prestige (there wasn’t much in this particular dept), but because of the work life balance and job security and feeling they were doing something important.

That’s not even the point. The civilian/military faculty split in Annapolis (I cannot speak for elsewhere) is by design. There are lots of good reasons for having civilians fill most faculty positions. There are obvious exceptions, such as Seamanship and Navigation.

But even aside from that, you can have a mental health disaster without suicide attempts. I’ve lived through several of those. It’s horrible to imagine those sailors trying to safely operate a nuclear plant or aircraft catapults, etc in that kind of state. Miraculous that more mishaps didn’t occur.
