🧵(1/2) NGC 7380 NGC 7380, also known as the Wizard Nebula, is a young open star cluster surrounded by an emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus. Taken on 26-08-28 from my backyard 🔭 William Optics Pleiades 111 📷 QHY Mini 8 Exposure: 7h 50min #Astrophotography #Space #DeepSpace #Astronomy
NGC 7380 is a young open cluster of stars in the northern circumpolar constellation of Cepheus, discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787. The surrounding emission nebulosity is known colloquially as the Wizard Nebula, which spans an angle of 25′. German-born astronomer William Herschel included his sister's discovery in his catalog, and labelled it H VIII.77. The nebula is known as S 142 in the 1959 Sharpless catalog (Sh2-142). It is extremely difficult to observe visually, usually requiring very dark skies and an O-III filter. The NGC 7380 complex is located at a distance of approximately 8.5 kilolight-years from the Sun, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way.

The cluster spans ~20 light-years (6 pc) with an elongated shape and an extended tail.[2] Age estimates range from 4[2] to 11.9[1] million years. At the center of the cluster lies DH Cephei, a close, double-lined spectroscopic binary system consisting of two massive O-type stars. This pair are the primary ionizing source for the surrounding H II region, and are driving out the surrounding gas and dust while triggering star formation in the neighboring region.[4] Of the variable stars that have been identified in the cluster, 14 have been identified as pre-main sequence stars while 17 are main sequence stars that are primarily B-type variables.[4]

Female birds with confusing names.
A six panel comic of female birds with confusing names, featuring a labeled portrait of each bird. In the first panel, there's a brown-headed cowbird with the label "entire body grayish-brown". In panel 2 there's a female red-winged blackbird labeled "orange-winged brownbird". In panel 3 there's a female black-throated blue warbler labeled "not-black throated" and "maybe some blue if you squint". In panel four there's a female scarlet tanager labeled "not scarlet" and "also, if we're being technical, not a tanager". In panel 5 there's a female red-cockaded woodpecker labeled "no red cockade" and "what even is a cockade?" and "don't worry about it". In the 6th panel there's a female northern cardinal labeled "mostly brown, despite being named for the red outfits worn by Catholic Cardinals" and "not allowed to become pope".

Imagine you're shrunk down to amoeba size & could observe a tiny plant root under the soil. The first thing you might notice is that the root isn't all plant cells. Both inside & outside the root are symbiotic fungal cells (grey in photo) in close association, working together. (🔬:Eye of Science)
It looks like giant dried cells with visible cell walls in brown and yellow, with green phloem tissue, but the grey stuff, which looks all sort of wispy and tangled, are the fungal cells that are in partnership.

In 2002, petroleum scientists found this vast geological feature under the North Sea, 80 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire. That centre section is 3km wide, the surrounding rings are 10km end to end - & it's clearly tens of millions of years old. Go on then. What's your best guess? 1/
