The Quiet Lanes appear to have the implicit approval of Oxford's car first lobby as well! Despite their dire warnings that people first measures are 'bad for business', he has tweeted to confirm that Rectory Farm has plenty of cars in their car park!
Screenshot of a tweet, with the Text...

Advocates of quiet lanes make a big deal about how it'll boost access to Rectory Farm shop - which sits at the top of a big hill.

Here's the parking at a Recrory Farm right now. The main car parks are full, and the overflow car parks are operational.

The bike parking? Not full.

On the topic of Connection many of these routes, link up P&R, train stations and bus routes. Furthermore, converting a muddy, bumpy path that might have stiles into a wheel friendly route opens up the country side for wheelchair, prams, mobility scooters. This isn't just about cycling.

I don't know any stats, but my / our friendship group is quite mixed. From the people I know, use of bikes to get around is about equal. The absence of safe, segregated routes is typically a bigger barrier for the less confident.

Many of those links already exist. If they didn't, as a family we would probably use the bus or drive. For us both, they are hugely useful for all types of journeys. It's not perfect, a current missing link makes the nursery cycle commute less than ideal, but still preferable to car dependency.

Who benefits? As a family, we often travel along the route from Abingdon to Oxford. It's also a very busy commuting route. My wife regularly uses the route to commute through the year. Late at night, she might take a different route if she's alone.

What do you think should be done? Scrap the project, perhaps. I'd like to see lighting install along a few, existing key routes, like NCN5 out past Kennington.

"Please use the Park and Ride" should be clear enough

Personally, I don't have any problem understanding it. However, if you are struggling to understand and want to visit Oxford by car, head for a Park and Ride. You'll need to figure out how to use a bus though.

Ah, okay. So your concerns are not about quiet lanes as such. More general about ebikes.

How do you imagine the assessment of if a rider is responsible or not is carried out? Maybe make people complete a form before making their journey? "Tick this box if you agree to complete your journey in a responsible manner"

fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Lol. For Oxford's miserabilists there is always either... Too much traffic or Not enough traffic Either way it's terrible 'for business'

fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Exactly, but not just the elderly. I know someone with long covid who depends on their ebike. They couldn't enjoy the freedom of cycling without it.

Respect to these 'Stroud Figures'. "Won't someone think about the chickens, local independent businesses, the health of our rivers - especially The River Wye." Seriously though, fuck KFC and their extractive style of capitalism.

The article fails to mention how the number of registered vehicles has increased by 15% over 10 years. Doing nothing would result in much slower buses. Weirdly, the Guardian article attributes blame to more space given to walking and cycling. With no mention of the actual cause of traffic jams.

fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I'm not sure about that. The number of vehicles on the road has increased 15% in the last 10 years, the time period quoted in the article. A do nothing approach, with more cars, and no extra space handed over to walking and cycling would seem more traffic and slower buses.

fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
A quick search... There's been a 14.9% increase in the total number of vehicles on the road over the last 10 years. Weirdly, the article doesn't mention this.

The problem here has nothing to do with solar power. The problem is dedicating huge urban areas to car parking. Resulting in urban sprawl, more roads, fewer homes, car dependant suburbs. 'Better' car parks aren't going to solve the problems caused by creating car first towns and cities

I often avoid cycling when it's cold. Maybe I'll drive, or take the bus or train. Carbrained Twitter idiots struggle to understand that having options is a good thing. I think they equate getting about to football. No, carbrained Twitter idiot, I don't need to pick a side.

The plight of the people of Gaza has been raised in this thread. A thread that's in response to a protest.

So, support another organisation then. PA protestors aren't stopping anyone from doing that.
110
fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The point of a functioning democracy is that people should have freedom of expression, that includes the right to protest. So, it really doesn't matter about what you think about their motives.
200
fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
In that case, do you think it's reasonable to label and charge these protestors as terrorists? Often giving them longer sentences then violent criminals?
010
fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Okay. So your view is if someone peacefully protests against a law, they should automatically be imprisoned as a terrorist? Same example, XR, their campaign that made people question the status quo was successful. In response many of their methods were criminalized.
000
fredfelt.bsky.social @fredfelt.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
People who support the states quo often claim similar to you. For example, a common line was that if XR truly cared about the environment they would shut down. The other side of the coin is that the establishment seeks to shut down any group that is at risk of changing the status quo.
