got a bit carried away answering an anon about the recent wave of censorship hitting nsfw games and art, but i think i got my point across.

A screenshot of me answering an anonymous ask on tumblr. The ask says: "damn, y'all are big mad that rape simulator 3000 isn't available anymore". My response goes: i know that it must be really easy for you to sit behind anon and feel morally superior saying this, because the nature of the media that institutions are trying to ban is NSFW and kinky, thus making it "embarrassing" and difficult to defend. But the fact that it's easy to cast opposition in a light that presents them all as "degenerate" perverts and therefore incentivises people to take warning voices less seriously is something worth examining. Sex workers have always been canaries in the coal mine for encroaching fascism and puritanism because "protecting the kids" is a slogan that is, on paper, impossible to oppose, but always ALWAYS is the start of a slippery slope of censorship that grows to include sexual liberation, queer existence, queer joy, and transparency in queer medical help.

My response continues:Banning content purely because it's obscene has always been a dangerous sentiment because noone has the same parameters of what's appropriate. Trans people just existing is obscene to some. That doesn't make them more morally correct when they bang their drums for trans representation to be eradicated. You bring up "rape simulator 3000" as evidence that we need limitations on NSFW media. Okay. So what did you say when Mouthwashing was banned, a game that explicitly depicted sexual assault in the context of male accountability, and moved thousands of people online? Is all art depicting anything unsavoury, no matter the intention, destined to be stripped from the internet? Are the SA victims who deal with their trauma and reclaim their bodies through SA roleplay worthy of shame and derision for not doing it in a sanitised way you approve of?

Are you truly prepared to let your government, wherever you live, decide what is suitable for you to come across online? How far would you be willing to take that? Are governments allowed to disrupt BDSM forums? Are websites educating people about appropriate knifeplay or CNC set to be wiped off the face of the earth? Or have you, in a desire to cater your own online experience, become someone who arrogantly orders for the table without asking what everyone wants to eat?

VILE: Exhumed, which was banned very shortly before its scheduled Steam release, has been released for free online, including on Github and the Internet Archive. Cara's statement, per the IA page:

VILE: Exhumed is a game about searching through an old computer, uncovering dark secrets, and experiencing the horrors of parasocial obsession and misogyny. There are references to sexual assault and violence against women, as well as depictions of gore – this was never a secret. This was the point.

It was intended to be released for sale on July 22, 2025 on Steam – the largest video game storefront in the world.

Instead, it was removed from Steam and banned for sale.

VILE: Exhumed was not banned for its use of gore, or its intense themes – themes that are sensitive but many players related to – it was wrongfully banned for “sexual content with depictions of real people.”

The game covers topics of assault, abuse, and entitlement, and uses a combination of FMV and practical effects to create images as horrifying as the themes. This was never a secret. There are a lot of intense visuals in VILE: Exhumed, but there is no uncensored nudity, no depictions of sex acts, and no pornography whatsoever – which is one of the justifications bad actors are using right now to censor games.

What this actually results in is taking power and storytelling away from women, other marginalized artists, and ultimately, from everyone.

This censorship of my work is a direct attack on creative expression and artistic freedom, and it will not stop with false accusations of sexual content.

They will come for anything that speaks more loudly than they do.

By giving the game away, for free, to whoever wants to play it, I am doing the same thing I set out to do when I started working on VILE: Exhumed, a game about sexual assault, male entitlement, and misogyny. Taking back my agency.

No one is allowed to dictate what kind of horror is acceptable, or what stories are allowed to be told.

I know people who've lived because their local rural hospital accurately diagnosed and then stabilized them before a helicopter flight to the city. You could land a helicopter on someone's front lawn, but that doesn't replace the triaging and stabilizing care that makes those transfers possible.
